UC Berkeley Transfer and Computer Science questions

Hi everyone,

I am an international student currently attending a community college in the Washington state. I applied to Berkeley's L&S college as a transfer student and just received the news of acceptance yesterday. I have a couple of questions regarding transferring and the CS major itself.

First of all, as a transfer student, how can I know which courses are transferable from my community college? This is because I am planning to apply to CS major and I am wondering how many per-requisites I will be completing before I actually start next fall.

Regarding the CS major itself, I heard that Berkeley is going to make it an impacted major next spring. If that is the case and say that I only have CS 61A and 61C to complete all of my pre-reqs, can I declare my major this upcoming fall semester?

Also, does 1 summer class at Berkeley has workload comparable to 2 classes in a regular semester or is it actually easier?

Thank you in advance!

Use assist.org to see which of your cc courses transfer over for your major. For non major courses you’ll have to ask your school about that.

You can declare your major once you complete all the lower div courses. For cs this means CS61A, B, and C, cs70, eecs42, and math54. You can apply the semester you’ll be completing the pre reqs and you’ll be accepted into the major after your fi al grades for that semester are satisfactory.

Full time in the summer is 6 units while in a regular semester is 13 so I guess what you said is about right. I think the classes are generally easier in tht the maybe the tests are a bit easier, but its at twice the pace.

[Welcome to ASSIST](http://www.assist.org) would be helpful if the OP were from a California community college, but the OP is at a Washington community college. Transfer credit would have to be evaluated individually, which leaves some uncertainty.

You can look here to see if any of the Berkeley courses are similar enough to what you took at your community college that there is a chance to receive subject credit:

[EECS Course WEB Sites](CAS - Central Authentication Service)

Even in California community colleges, it is very rare to find a course equivalent to CS 61A, 61C, or 70, and equivalents to CS 61B are not that common either.

xfer123 and ucbalumnus,

Thank you for both of your reply. Yes, unfortunately I cannot use assist.org since it is only intended for California community college.

I have also checked the brief information of each pre-reqs and hopefully I will have both CS 61B and EE 42 by the time I transfer. I already took 3 java classes, one of which focuses on data structures, 3 calculus-based physics classes and I am currently taking an introductory class for electrical circuit (All of these classes are in quarter system).
