UC Berkeley Transfer (Chance me)

I am currently enrolled at UC Davis, and was hoping to apply for transfer to UC Berkeley for fall 2015. I have completed two years at UC Davis, and have taken some time off school due to national service back in my country. Yes, I'm an international student. I won't be coming back to the US until June next year.

Current college: UC Davis
GPA: 4.00
Major GPA: 4.00
Major: Economics
SATs: 1860 (really bad, didn't do well in high school tbh)

Hoping to major in Economics and minor in CS in UC Berkeley

Completed all GE requirements (not sure how reciprocity works) and major requirements (of Berkeley).

Extracurriculars in college: Not particularly strong in college, was part of the Global Ambassador Mentorship Program. Was a member of the Economics and Business Student Association. Did community work, not excessive though.

Extracurricular in high school: Champion in high school inter faculty soccer tournament, member of the high school ultimate frisbee A team, member of the high school arts and crafts club, participated in various economics-centered competitions. Volunteered full-time in an underfunded elementary school in a third-world country (clocked more than 5 hours a week), involved in corporate restructuring and re-modeling of a rapidly growing pet and veterinary services franchise. Also involved in the construction of a POS system which pairs up with SAP back-office applications. Achieved grade 6 in yamaha's electone program (highest grade attainable by a student). Provided paid tutoring lessons to high school students (after I graduated) and elementary school students. Over 100 hours of community service.

I heard that the Econ major in UC Berkeley is pretty impacted, just want to also confirm this claim. Also understand that when transferring to Cal, students transfer to the college not the major, just want to find out if that means that even if I am accepted to Cal, I may not get a guaranteed spot in Econ and probably end up doing other branches of Econ?

Should I consider retaking my SATs? I've read the posts of a lot of people on forums discouraging students to take it, and also many who thinks it's a good idea since it shows determination, need some truthful perspectives on it (hopefully from someone with this transfer experience)

I'm not sure if any of you have considered Stanford as well when transferring to Cal. I know that the rates are very depressing, but I would really want to try. Do I stand a chance at Stanford too?

SAT scores don’t matter whatsoever for transfer applicants.

Your grades are strong, but Berkeley doesn’t take too many transfers from other UCs. Still, I think you’re competitive for economics with your ECs and 4.0 GPA. And yes, you are admitted by division, not by major. You have to petition for economics when you get there. They have additional grade and class requirements for people who get in for that major, so good luck with that. It is true that econ is impacted. Take note of that if you’re accepted to their econ program.

Stanford is a huge reach for anyone trying to transfer there. I believe about 99% of all transfer applicants get rejected, so your odds of getting in are extremely, extremely slim. Best of luck if you decide to apply there, though.

Like Cayton said, SAT doesn’t matter. +1 on Stanford being super competitive as well.

Yes, Econ is impacted here. It’s in L&S, which admits everyone undeclared. You’ll have to take 1-3 classes after transfer with some GPA, and then you’re in the program. I lived with a bunch of econ majors last year, I think all but one (the one that liked to party) got into the major, so I think for most people it’s doable? Especially if you’ve got a 4.0 now, I think you’ll be okay. You can read the Econ transfer stuff here: <a href=“Incoming Transfer Students | Department of Economics”>Incoming Transfer Students | Department of Economics;

As for whether or not you’ll get in, I don’t know why you’re asking us? You’ve got perfect grades, the right coursework, and some ECs. Your chances are pretty much as good as they could be, so all you can do is apply and see what they say. But we can’t tell you anything new.

CS minor might be tricky to do. Transfers only get 4 semesters (can petition for 5), and the CS minor is another 7 classes. So you’d have to plan pretty carefully, or possibly take summer session to get the minor. If you haven’t done CS before, you’d need to start on the minor in your first semester, since you’ll need to take 61A, 61B, and 61C, which are supposed to be a series (doubling up is a bad idea).
