Hey everyone,

Was recently accepted to UC Berkeley as a transfer student. A good friend of mine transferred to another school (out of state mind you), but did mention that as transfers, we obviously have a limited number of semesters. Does anybody know how this works at UCB? If I transfer in a Junior, do I have a limit of 4 semesters? Thing is, I've considered changing my major if I attend Berkeley, and doing so would likely require me to stay more than 2 years. How would that work?

Thanks all!

You are limited to 1 semester to change your major, or before hitting 80 units.

However, you are not limited to 4 semesters. You are limited by the unit ceiling, which is you cannot register for classes after you gain more than 130 units. I plan on staying 3 years because I have units that are deductible such as AP.

Depending on the intended major, switching might not be possible at all. You should check the department’s individual policy on major changes to make sure you can do it.

And yes, typically you’re limited to 2 years, or until you hit the unit ceiling. There are some exceptions, like CoE will automatically grant an extra semester to transfers who are missing a certain number of pre-reqs. That’ll vary by college as well.

If the goal is to drastically change your major (english to eecs, or something) you’re probably out of luck. If they’re similar enough that you won’t be behind, it’ll be much easier.
