Parting words:
Last year I only applied to UCI and they laughed me out of admissions. After one final academic renewal and more classes, UCI had to take me this year because I TAGGED! The best thing that ever happened to me was the UCI rejection! I would not have received aid (average grades). I applied for academic renewal last fall, and got in to every UC I applied to, and even got 2 full rides. Sometimes, you have to be thankful that you were rejected. Keep your eye on the ball, don’t pay attention to what anybody says.

@BabySmurf i definitely agree with you about it being ok to leave blanks on the supplemental app. i applied to uc berkeley haas this year and was admitted and i only put 1 award and left 2 blanks on volunteer, and 1 bank each on both work experience and ECs. i was honest and didn’t over-exaggerate because honestly the ad-coms are really good at knowing what is bull vs. the truth. if you’re gonna lie, be smart about and make it sound realistic/doable. i think they appreciate honesty and remember it’s more about quality than quantity.

Decision: Accepted

Intended Major: English
UC GPA: 3.89
Major GPA: 3.94
Major Pre-reqs Complete? 2/4
IGETC: Yes

Which other schools did you apply to?
Applied: UCSC, UCSB
Accepted: UCSC, UCSB
Rejected: none
Waitlisted: none
Pending: none

Extracurriculars:none
Job/Work Experience: none in my field
Volunteer/Community service: I volunteered in high school about 80 hours in elementary schools and volunteered over 100 after high school at science camps. I haven’t volunteered in about a year though.
Achievements/Awards: none
Personal Statement: For an English major, I’d say it was weak. Overall I think it was above average though. I got no help from anyone. No one looked over it. Both personal statements were done in about two hours total, and my application was submitted a couple minutes before the deadline. The first part wasn’t about my passion for English but instead my love of reading coupled with love for teaching. The second one was about my my dad’s cheating, my mom’s leaning on me for support, them getting back together after, and being able to forgive and grow up.

School Type: Community College
Ethnicity: Hispanic
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: average

Reflection: I was shocked. I applied only because my parents made me and didn’t think I’d even had a chance.
Strengths: Possibly my personal statement? It wasn’t stellar or my best work. At the same time I think they got a feel for who I was. It was honest. My gpa might be seen as a positive. It is Berkeley though…
Weaknesses: My ecs are lacking as of lately. I had a semester off after graduating high school as well. Missing the prerequisites even though they were offered at my ccc was a main flaw. I would have done them if I had actually thought I was going to apply here.
Why you think you were accepted/rejected: see strengths. Those might not even be accurate though. I really have no clue.

[li]Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Probably due to lack of extra cirriculars and my major being the most competitive major at Berkeley.[/ul]
[/li]

General Comments: I thought I was in for sure. I remember thinking back in December after getting straight A’s my last semester that I was already in. I didn’t even think I would be surprised when I was accepted. My counselor told me “If you don’t get in, no one will.” I have made a post on this website about my situation, asking others if they can think of a reason why I was not accepted. This thread also has a link to my transcript. I will update the thread as I continue to gain new information.
