Basically, I am starting community college in the fall, and am torn between Psychology and Computer Science, however they seem to be mutually exclusive in terms of course work to take at my Community College in preparation for transfer, I have not yet signed up for classes, and feel as if I select a Psych centric schedule, or CS one it will exclude or reduce my chances of getting into the other. Additionally, I was wondering what the transfer process would be like for Berkeley, with regards to them having L&S and EECS respectively, if I were to transfer would I need to apply to one of these directly? Would I need to apply to Berkeley for general admittance and then petition into one of those marginally? And also if I were to go for Psychology and have a change of heart, I had heard that if admitted to L&S as a transfer, you are not allowed to petition into the EECS department and therefor can only get a BA in Computer Science as opposed to a BS.
(sorry for the rambling and poor structure I’m not a native English speaker and I’m very tired, but any advice is greatly appreciated!)
TLDR;
concerned about my first semester schedule at a junior college
wondering how the Berkeley transfer application works (Apply to Berkeley L&S then petition into EECS? Apply to EECS
Directly?)
if admitted to L&S, is it possible to get into EECS later? Would I be able to change my major from Psych to CS? And if so
would I be able to get a BS, or would I be restricted to a BA?
For UCB, you can apply for direct admission to EECS. Or you can apply to L&S CS (which has fewer prerequisites), but (if admitted) then you need to complete the remaining CS prerequisites at UCB with a 3.3 GPA or higher to get into the L&S CS major. Changing majors into EECS after enrolling is basically impossible. Do not worry about the degree title BA versus BS for L&S CS or EECS.
You can take courses to work to both majors for the first semester or few. For example, courses like the equivalents of UCB Math 1A, 1B, 54 can be applied to both majors. Psychology and other social studies courses for the psychology major can be used for breadth/GE for the EECS or L&S CS major. Courses like Biology 1A/1AL or MCB 32/32L may also be helpful for both majors or breadth/GE requirements.
Example course articulations from Laney College to UCB for the various majors:
Yet another choice you can do at Berkeley is the newly minted major, Data Science. Data Science is closely allied with Computer Science and some with Stats. Within Data Science you have to choose a Domain Emphasis, which is sort of like choosing a minor within Data Science. One of the domain emphasis choices is Psychology. Except for the Data 8 class, all the Lower Division requirements for Data Science (can) overlap with Computer Science.
Hello, I plan of transferring fall 2019 and I saw on assist.org that all courses in a course series must be taken at the same community college, the class schedule at my community college is kinda messed up so I had to take diffy Q at my main campus and linear at another. Both the colleges are in the same cc district. Would this affect my admission? Please help
Ah yes, I see. Thx. It says both courses are needed. It does not say they need to be at the same college. However I might be interpreting it incorrectly. Regardless, since OP is taking the course in the same district (and I assume the same course number), it should be fine.
Regarding the need to take linear and diff at same college maybe @mikemac or @ucbalumnus have more insight.
The issue with differential equations and linear algebra is that UCB has them as a combined sophomore level course, MATH 54, so transfer students need to take both courses if they are separate courses at CCs. Although it would be sensible to accept them from different CCs, they may not want to list all possible combinations of differential equations and linear algebra from different CCs.
You may want to ask UCB admissions and math department directly about your situation of combining differential equations and linear algebra from different CCs to cover UCB MATH 54.
I am transferring next fall as a Psych student and Berkeley is my #1 school that i’d like to go to.
Here’s what you need to know to get you there as a psych transfer to UCB:
