UC Berkeley Transfer Thread 2018

Your igetc is done already before spring? Wow nice!! I’m a soc applicant for Berkeley as well. 4.0 gpa with prereqs done but I’m finishing up igetc this spring. Good luck!!!

@UCWinner ^^ forgot to tag you sorry this post above was meant for you

@ericbadmon wow a 4.0!! good for you!! best of luck!! Is Berkeley your first choice? It’s a great school for soc

Ucla is but I’m thinking it’s Berkeley more and more everyday. I only applied sociology cuz I knew I had no chance with my first choice major for Berkeley cuz I was missing crucial prereqs. I’m kinda worried tho cuz I’m taking English 2 this semester. I think you’re a good candidate with the igetc already done tho, cuz your application is super “complete”

@ericbadmon same! ucla was my first choice too but I also have been thinking about Berkeley. I think you are in great shape!! I just finished english 102 as well in the winter so I think you’re just fine!

Hello everyone, as you can tell from my username, UCLA is my dream school, but I have also applied to and am considering UC Berkeley (I already posted this under the UCLA Transfer thread a few weeks ago)

Background: I applied to UCLA and Cal as a Freshman last year, but unfortunately got waitlisted at both and ultimately didn’t get in to UCLA, but I was accepted off Berkeley’s waitlist as a Spring Admit, but I chose not to go since I wanted to have a second chance at UCLA as a transfer. (Plus Cal’s financial aid wasn’t that good). I took loads of community college classes and AP exams while in high school, and for that reason I am applying to Berkeley and UCLA as a transfer after only 1 year of Community College. Honestly, I think I have a good shot as a History transfer student, but I think the Personal Insight responses were the biggest weak spot in my application, as I wrote them last minute and they were kinda cliche/cringy.

CCC student from Pasadena City College
Major: History
Alternative Major: German (I wrote in the essays how I wanted to double major in History and German)
GPA: 4.0
126 UC transferable semester units completed by the end of Fall 2017
32 semester units from AP Exams
Major Prep: All completed by the end of Fall 2017. Completed 10 history major classes
Major Prep GPA: 4.0

IGETC: Done by Fall 2017, already certified by PCC
TAP: No

Schools Applying to: UCLA (History), Berkeley (History)

EC: Nothing special, most of my ECs were from High School, but I started taking full time Community College classes in my Junior year. The only EC that I continued into college was my volunteer Docent position. (See Below)

-Volunteer docent at a local History Museum (5 years)
-Used to be a History and German Language tutor back in high school
-Former President of the History club at my high school
-Worked as a Student Worker part time for four years back in high school

Personal Insight Responses: 6.5/10
-I personally think the essays were the weakest part of my application, since I did them last minute and wrote pretty generic responses
-Hopefully my GPA will make up for my lackluster essay responses.

Background:
Caucasian
Middle Class
First generation student
Multilingual

Conclusion:
-Overall, I think I have a pretty good chance at getting in, since I am applying with a 4.0 GPA, have all pre-reqs completed by Fall, IGETC completed by Fall, and at least 60 semester units completed by Fall. Even though my ECs and Personal Insights were kinda lackluster, Im hoping that Cal will place more emphasis on my academics.

Good luck everyone!

Hey Guys!

I’m a UC Berkeley/UCLA transfer hopeful!! African American Studies (planning to double major in Econ)

Can you guys tell me what you think about my chances?

So I’m Currently a student at my CC in San Francisco. However, I have taken what will be 37 Units (end of spring) at UC Berkeley through cross-enrollment programs with my JC, Summer Sessions at UC Berkeley and UC Extension.

I have essentially split the units between both institutions. JC: 32 Units with 3.53 GPA. UC Berkeley: 33 Units with 3.375 GPA. Will Be IGETC certified by end of spring 18 with a total of 74 units before Fall transfer. Major GPA: 4.0

Completed these REQS at CAL.
English R1A & R4B: B+
Physical Science: B
Quantitative Reasoning: C
Even earned A’s in two upper division classes in my prospective major at Berkeley.
Completed all but one major prereq as College didn’t offer it.

Extra Curricular: Alpha Sigma Gamma CC honor Society. Working, Semper Coast Guard Club, Volunteer with At-risk youth in the community. Volunteer at a Homeless shelter.

Major: Political Science
GPA: 3.52
CCC: DVC
Major GPA: 4.0
Major Prep: All done except for one class that I’m taking now
IGETC: Will be finished by end of spring, have one more science class left to take, and my arts credit to finish.
TAP: No
ECs:
-Kumon Tutor- work 15 hours a week
-Tutor local elementary school students
-stay home and take care of 10 year old sister, both parents work.

PIs: Had them checked in Berkeley drop in sessions, counselor last time said they were good, and I was a competitive applicant.

Applied: UCLA, UCB, UCSD

I am transferring in one year, so I took 12 units in summer, 19 in fall, and 20 this semester, AP credit is pulling me over to 68 credits. The reason my GPA is so low, is because I got a D in my Microeconomics course over the summer, I took a three week class that coincided with my high school graduation and finals week, but the rest of the classes during the summer were all A’s taken over the regular 6 week period. I explained this on my application as well.

Not sure how I’ll do in admissions though, would love some input.
Thanks!

@hailey5799
I think that D is gonna be the biggest obstacle for you. Otherwise, you have a pretty decent chance.

Does anybody know how important the TAP is? Cause I hear different things about it, but I still have no idea.

@hailey5799 having a D on your transcript is like having some criminal record in the eyes of UCB and UCLA, RETAKE THAT CLASS,FAM. It doesn’t matter if you explained on your application you took the class during high school finals. That was your decision to do so and it will be seen as a poor decision by the UCs. I don’t think anyone gets into a top tier university with a D unless they were some all-star athlete, musician, artist, or are high-achieving in some other field outside of class. Whoever told you that you were a competitive applicant was lying or was trying to make you feel better You are below the 25th percentile for UCB and UCLA and you’re average for UCSD’s political science transfer matriculates. Also, I recommend not using AP credit to fulfill pre-req requirements (if you are) because you NEED more than just AP prep (you could also use a review of the material) if you are to succeed in UCB, UCLA, or UCSD upper division courses.

P.S. don’t rush college if you don’t need to. It’s not like you’re going to die if you don’t complete college within an amount of time. Your GPA is tanking because you’re overworking yourself with too many units and extra curricular activities :/.

Hey peoples, Psychology major her. Was wondering if someone could chance me here. I have pretty good grades but I don’t have tons of extracurricular activities cause I work. Hoping that doesn’t negatively affect me too much.
I’m a California Community College student
Applied to UC Berkeley, UCLA, Davis, and San Diego
GPA: 4.0 (dean’s highest honors for past 4 semesters)
Major GPA 4.0
Will have 60 units done at end of fall 2017
Taking emt course in spring to fill time
EC: weak; last volunteer work was in High School spend most of my time working about 25-30 hrs a week. Started at entry level and now in beginning stages of management. Work at some job for over two years.
Personal statement: hope to make up for weak ec with background info. Parents are both addicts and i was raised by my grandparents. First generation college student. Independent income and not a good high school student. Have since changed my ways and have a 4.0 for last 5 semesters (Dean’s highest honors).

I know Berkeley is heavy on EC but I hope my persoal statements and grades can help neutralize the weak EC. Berkeley is definitely my number one choice.

@tman831 You’re in if your personal statements were interesting and relieved from obvious grammar errors.

I’m planning on going to a CC from NC, would like to transfer into Berkeley or NC State. Is it difficult to transfer from a different state into Berkeley? What are some base stats? I would like to major in Comp. Sci thoughts?

@Anhionring I am retaking it right now, I mentioned that on my application as well, I didn’t have room in the fall because I was taking 19 credits in the fall and my CCC doesn’t let you exceed if you haven’t proven you can take at least 15 credits and make a 3.0, which I hadn’t at the time. I guess I forgot to mention on my post above that I was retaking, I mentioned it to the UCB counselor that’s why they said I was competitive. Of course I was retaking, the minute I saw the D I knew I was retaking. I’m taking 20 credits right now, 19 last semester, 12 during the summer.

As for using AP credit to pull me over, I’m only using it in the case of my first English credit, the second one I had to take as a class got done in the fall, and covering one of humanities IGETC reqs, the rest is just credit space to pull me over. Technically I have 51 credits done, 48 with the Microeconomics replaced, and 18 credits in AP exams.

@hailey5799 They’ll still see that D on application before you finish retaking the class. But, as you said, you explained to them how you were going to make up for it so…hopefully it works out (rooting for you ;D)

Hey dudes!
Guess I’m kinda obligated to get chanced too huh haha.
Anyway here goes:

Major: Econ
GPA(for everything): 4.0(also part of the honors program)

I’ll have 48 credits done by this spring and 12.5 from the AP tests.
I’m kinda in the same boat as @hailey5799 is, as I’m applying as a junior transfer only one year out of Community College. From what I hear, I may be a bit screwed as far as chances go.

IGETC: Everything aside from a lab science is done

TAP: No

ECs: Eh; Debate coach for local high school, intern for CHSSA, temporary assistant to our CCC speech coach, some volunteering things here and there, wrote a research paper for Philosophy that’s currently undergoing review.

PIQs: 7-8/10ish; Nothing spectacular, but I think I did pretty not bad for all of them

Anyways, let me know what you guys think! I’ll appreciate anything y’all toss at me.

@Anhionring Thanks! :slight_smile:

@mantisaurus GPA wise, especially for your GPA you’re golden, from what I heard the transferring in one year looks impressive in application process, ECs are good too, although the fact that they don’t relate to your major might hurt you a bit. I don’t know what your PIQs look like, but if they’re good then I think you have a good shot from what I’ve been told.

@jd1209 I think the figures are like 95 percent or more of all accepted transfers are from CCCs, California Community Colleges. In admissions those of us coming from CCCs have priority, then its students transferring from other UCs and CSUs, then its out of state university students. You have to be pretty spectacular in GPA and ECs to get in. Good luck though!

@jljackson I think you have a good chance if poly sci isn’t impacted, I’m not sure if it is or not.
BTW do you remember the supplemental forms that you had to fill for the update on the MAP@Berkeley portal?
I guess people in the past had 3 forms total. 1 about IGETC/gen ed., 1 about your prereqs, and another one being an acknowledgement that you filled out the TAU
I don’t remember if I had that acknowledgement. I remember specifically it only gave me the option to fill out one of the forms, the IGETC one.
I’m kinda freaking out tho, cuz I’m hoping I didn’t just stupidly miss a form on there. So I thought I’d ask around, do you remember what forms you filled on the transfer update for MAP@Berkeley? The one that was due on 01/31/18
