How hard is it to transfer to UC Berkeley as an economics major. Currently my GPA is 3.93. I go to a California community college. I only have one "W" on my transcripts. Do I stand a chance of getting in to UC Berkeley? If not UC Berkeley, what about UCLA?

I’m sorry. You really don’t.

The average GPA for econ transfers to Berkeley is around 3.8, so in that respect, you stand a good chance. The only thing that would hold you back would be pre-reqs, igetc, essay, and lack of extracurriculars. For UCLA, TAP would help if you have it. I can’t give you a percentage, but assuming the above mentioned things don’t hold you back, you have a good chance of getting into UCLA and/or Berkeley.

Avg gpa is 3.7

youre not going to get into any school if you cant do simple research and READ, thats how i get most of my information, it usually works.

sh4d0wz DO ME A FAVOR ! the forum was created for people who want to ask questions ! and a lot of the users here keep telling others to search and do their own research ! well u never know maybe he has access to the internet only once a day for a little amount of time ! i mean if people wont ask questions then whats the point of this forum ? and a lot of people actually research but they would like to know what others think so u never know maybe he has researched the subject but he wanted to know what other people think and he didnt mention what he found so peoples answered wont get affected by his data !1!! i do it all the time !!! i always love to check and recheck and i keep researching all the time but i never mention it in my posts ! so you never know !!! and u have no right to tell him or anybody else what research skills they need to get into universities !

^i stopped reading after the 20th exclamation point…

For the helpful people thank you.

I can’t speak for UCLA, but for Cal, CCC transfers have a higher acceptance rate than the overall acceptance rate. Any GPA from 3.7 - 4.0 is competitive; a 3.93 sounds like you got 1 B, it’s not likely going to be an issue. Neither will the W. The essay and EC’s obviously play a part that makes it impossible to judge; but GPA wise and transfer student wise you’re good. I was also a CCC student, and transferred with a 3.91 that included 2W’s. Getting accepted to Cal is the first part, you’ll still need to be accepted by the College of L&S. You declare Econ your first semester, enroll in either an intermediate macro or micro class and a stat class, then submit your application. When the semester’s over they let you know. As a capped major, you’ll need to have a 3.0 in the micro, macro, calc 1&2 classes taken at your CC (no prob), and then a 2.7 (B-) in the two classes at CAL (not each, just overall). According to the Econ application, the average GPA of those accepted is 3.34. This may seem low, but the stat course tends to be the GPA killer. They’re full of prospective business and econ majors competing to get into capped majors. This is not helped by a rather stiff curve (about 40% get C’s). Not bad news, just some sobriety. Good luck.

You have a really good chance. If there’s a reason (a good one, not just an excuse or a lie) that you got the W, you should explain it.

Make sure you finish your pre reqs by spring and the IGETC as well, double check if there are specific requirements for your major.

If you want more specific information theres a chance thread, which is why everyone has their panties in a bunch about you posting here. Haha
