UC Berkeley vs. Georgia Tech vs. UMass Amherst

I'm weighing all three schools for their Computer Science program.

Berkeley:
50K+ tuition because I am Out of State
B.A. in Computer Science (NOT EECS major)

Georgia Tech:
36K+ tuition because I am Out of State
Honors program
BS in Computer Science

UMass Amherst:
20K+ tuition because I am In State
Honors program

Basically, I would like to know whether the 200K price for Cal is worth it for their BA CS program as opposed to the cheaper alternatives of Tech and UMass. Thanks!

Very tough choice.

Personally I would not be able to justify the debt for Cal. Sounds like it would be a cool school to go to, but $200k is just waaaaay to much for undergrad. Unless of course your parents/you can afford it. Will your parents be contributing?

Good luck

Don’t worry about the fact that you would get a Bachelor of *Arts/i in Computer Science at Berkeley.

But do worry about the difference in costs, especially if it results in a large amount of extra student loan debt.

Both Berkeley and Georgia Tech have career surveys by major of their graduates on their web sites. Consider whether typical pay levels after graduation would make a given amount of student loan debt manageable.

That’s what I am afraid of. My parents have enough to cover the first year and a half at Berkeley but after that, we would have to see. I would still have to pay 36K for Tech though which is still a hefty amount. I was also admitted to Northeastern University’s CS program which is in my state and would cost 34K. Ahh, this is so difficult!

UMASS - the other two options are simply not worth so much extra debt.
