I am deciding between the two, which one is a better school. Everyone in the world has heard of Berkeley but anytime i tell someone of middlebury they're like, what? Bottom line, which is a better and more prestigious school?

If you care about prestige, you should never have looked at LAC's.
Most average people don't know the names of the most 'prestigious' LAC's.

If you're looking to throw around a name, then in this case Berkeley's for you, but if you want a very intimate learning environment then Middlebury's your school.

If you care more what most others think instead of the actual reality of the education, then go with Berkeley.
Club Midd is as good a school if not better because of how personal the education is.

Your pick...

There couldn't be two more different schools in terms of your educational experience. One is huge, all teaching assistants and no prof contact. The other is small, all profs
Where do you live?
Everyone on the east coast knows middlebury

Weren't responses due May 1?

Arcadia, ya responses were due may 1st but because of complications with the college board sending my scores all the colleges gave me my decisions later than everybody else and so now they are giving me 10 more days after the deadline.

I live in California and around here Berkeley is probably one of the most sought after schools and even when i mentioned Middlebury to my counselor she didnt know what i was talking about and then she researched about it and said it was a great school.

But let's face it, the most important reason for going to college is to get a job after college or go to grad school and if my college counselor and many of my friends, who know a lot about colleges, dont know about the school how is some future employer going to know? I dont think the employer will research the school and see how good it is.

I understand that going to a LAC will be more personal and provide a good college-experience, but which one would help the most for grad school or a job?

undergrad-> Midd.
Grad-> Berkeley

If you're considering grad school (law, business, medicine), then you might want to look at this Wall Street Journal ranking of the top "feeder" undergrad colleges into the top grad schools.

Middlebury comes in at #23 (ahead of Ivy Cornell), while Berkeley is at #41 (behind UMich and UVA). Clearly some people (including grad school admissions reps) have lots of respect for Middlebury. You're average Joe on the street will likely know about Berkeley, but among elite circles, Midd may hold more cachet.

Just because your friends don't know the names doesn't mean anything.
I'm pretty sure you don't want to be working under them when you graduate...
If you want to get lost in Undergrad, go to Berkeley, unless you're brilliant and don't want any focus to yourself.
I know a girl in cali, she turned down berkeley and is going to wesleyan. Doesn't regret it one bit. Trust me, wesleyan has it a lot worse than clubb midd, atleast they don't confuse midd with a girls school haha.

I know it doesnt mean anything that my friends dont know it, but i was trying to get at my point: if people that know A LOT about colleges and are in the whole process of going to college right now dont know about Middlebury, then who will?

Thanks for the website Arcadia, but that is only a survey of 15 "top" schools its says. Midd may be ahead of Berkeley because the students that attend Berkeley are not as financially well-to-do as the average Midd student and thus might not be able to afford grad school. I have read something that said that over 45% of Berk students had parents with combined incomes of less than 45K...that makes it tough to got to grad school.

I have until the tenth of May to decide where i want to go. I am torn between the two. My parents say Berk because they are from Iran and prestige is a VERY big deal for them. Money is not much of an issue for me. I am not that much into the whole prestige thing, but i dont want to go to a school that nobody knows of. I am soooo confused.

Your call, depends on how you like the weather too.
It's slightly cold up at Midd. haha.
Honestly though, you're picking between two amazing schools and can't go wrong. If the prestige is what you're drawn to, then knock yourself out.

Most people on the west coast can't even identify all the Ivy's, does that make them less prestigious?

The top LAC's draw a lot of respect, if that's what you were wondering about. Their names may not be profound throughout the world but that doesn't make them any worse. Those who need to know about them, know about them.

What are you going to college for anyway? If you actually have an interest or a goal, then you'll figure out how to get there at either school. You might actually find yourself more engaged and involved in your academics at a place like Middlebury, where you have so much access to professors and, I imagine, opportunity.

But if all you care about is a school's prestige and not the actual school experience, then go to Berkeley. I'm not too impressed with your line of questioning anyway; you already should know that you'll do just fine at either place.

I'm from the East Coast; many years ago a friend of mine moved back from LA. I asked her why she came back. She said she was tired of dealing with people who couldn't finish a sentence.

Enough said.

you know what, i want to be able "to throw around a name".........IM GOING TO BERKELEY!!!!!
I just signed my SIR!

Berkeley is WAYYYYYYY more elite, presitgious, and awesome than Middlebury anyways. They have 9 Nobel Laureates. How many does middlebury have? ZERO. Plus, it's a liberals paradise ( finally leaving the DAMN conservatives in Southern California and going to meet some decent people).

GO BEARS! GO BEARS! GO BEARS! GO BEARS! GO BEARS! GO BEARS! GO BEARS! GO BEARS! GO BEARS! GO BEARS! GO BEARS! GO BEARS! GO BEARS! GO BEARS! GO BEARS! GO BEARS!

One more time..........

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO BEARS!!!!!!!!

that was a bit uncalled for?

tard......

Grow up, ab-med.

you guys are just upset that im REJECTING Midd. Im too good for them. Im gonna start my own thread for people who turned down Midd for Berk

Lawl, what a fruit!

No, we're not upset that you "rejected" Middlebury. Frankly, if you're for real in these postings, I bet many of us are thrilled that you're going to Berkeley.

I was actually going to say that, but I decided that it was too mean. In hindsight, it's 100% true :-)
