Hi! I'm interested in pursuing environmental science and journalism as an undergraduate. I know that NYU has an incredible journalism program, UC Berkeley has an incredible environmental sciences program and a great journalism school for graduate students, and then I mainly love Tufts because of the courses that they offer in the ExCollege! I'm not quite sure what sort of access undergraduates have to the graduate school of journalism at Cal, but the fact that it's there is a plus, haha.

I don't know which one to choose, although I'm definitely leaning towards Cal. How do the environmental sciences and journalism programs at Tufts compare to those at Cal and NYU?
Which one should I choose???? ahhhhhhhhhhh!

Are you instate for Cal? If so, definitely go there and save money. If not, I’d look at the geographical and student body differences between the 3 schools. Tufts and NYU are both in major cities (lots of work and internship opportunities), and I’m sure Cal has them too. All three schools have good programs and will provide you with an excellent education, though Tufts and Cal are definitely stronger in the sciences than NYU. I think it comes down to personal fit.

With Tufts you would get the most personal attention, smallest classes, and the most opportunities to shine.

I know that last semester TU had a very popular Ex College course taught by a freelance journalist who often wrote for ESPN. Networking opportunities like that are hard to pass up.

Berkeley. You can network to your heart’s content there. And it might be a good experience to live across the country. You’ll learn a lot about yourself in the process.

This is too weird…I’m in between UC Berkeley and Tufts for Environmental studies as well. I’m from the east coast too. I am leaning towards Cal but am a bit worried about its large size and the economic situation. I don’t know where to go!?

Yes, Cal has a great Enviro program, but so do many colleges (it’s big everywhere). UC’s are a lousy deal at OOS rates. Take the private at the same cost.

Although I was an Econ major at Cal…the experience there was awesome. You get a little bit of everything in Berkeley. The school is excellent, the climate is fantastic and the people were great. I don’t know anything about Tuft but Cal was a great experience.

I would go with Cal. It has the strongest programs and reputation among those schools and should you change your mind about your intended major, it wouldn’t matter. Winters in the Bay Area are certainly better, too.

You really should visit these schools, if you haven’t already. I assume you have visited Tufts, but you should make a trip out to Berkeley.
