Hello,
I’m an Ohio HS senior who has been admitted to both UM’s and UCB’s engineering colleges. At the moment, it would be roughly the same price for me to go to either university, and neither are giving me any merit or need scholarship. My family can (fortunately) afford either.
Where is life better? Ann Arbor or Berkeley?
Where is better for a ME in terms of opportunities, during and after undergrad?
What other questions should I be asking?
I searched through the website and didn’t find any posts from students in my position specifically (OOS for both, already admitted to both, engineering). I would appreciate any help you can offer.
Thank you,
khushi97
PS I’m new to CC, hope I haven’t broken any rules!
Oh no, you are right down the middle of the fairway for a first time CC post, considering you already missed your chance to ask “what ECs do I need to get in to Harvard?”
Have you visited both? That is a real tough decision to make without visiting. Academically there is no bad choice.
I did visit both, and unfortunately both were very rushed visits. I’ll be taking a better visit to UM in a few days for their campus day, and I am certain that that will swing me towards UM. But only because I won’t have time for a good visit to Berkeley, so I’m asking here.
I know that either place I go, I will be well off for my education and future life. But I will be a completely different person if I go to one place or the other.
Attended Berkeley for ME, living a few minutes away from Ann Arbor now.
Are you like Desmond Howard’s son? Fellow Ohioans will not appreciate one of your top two choices.
To answer you though, it depends what career you find it interesting afterwards. If it’s automotive industry, then it is hands-down UM. If you’re looking forward to one of the companies in the bay area, then Berkeley will give you a competitive advantage. As far as getting opportunities like internships, it depends on how you sell yourself, not the school.
Both are charming schools surrounded with pretty serious people. I guess it depends what career interests you and if you really want to go far away or not.
