UC Berkeley vs. U.Va- Architecture

I was admitted to both UC Berkeley and U.Va for architecture. Which should I choose?

Looks like neither has an NAAB-accredited BArch (5 year preprofessional) program. However, a BA/BS in architecture may allow you to subsequently complete an NAAB-accredited MArch is less time than for someone with a BA/BS in another major.

@esresr,Two excellent choices! Both schools have highly rated architecture schools. (Both only offer graduate professional degrees, but the influence rubs off.) UCB ranks higher for architecture; UVA ranks higher for overall university. Both would offer plenty of options should you decide architecture is not for you.

Some points to consider:

  1. Finances
    Especially if you plan to get an MArch. You want to limit debt incurred for your BA/BS.
  1. Geographic area Where do you intend to end up? Internships, which can influence future jobs, tend to be most plentiful among nearby firms.UCB has an worldwide name recognition. UVA is well respected among the architecture community on the east coast, but is somewhat less known in other parts of the country and internationally.
  2. Undergraduate degree UCB's BA is heavily influenced by environmental design. The first architecture studio isn't until junior year. UVA BS students start directly on the architecture track and have their first studio sophomore year. I haven't studied the curricula closely enough to point out nuances, but you should consider opportunities to study abroad, thesis requirements, internship assistance and track record for completing the degree in 4.0 years. Most importantly look at where the BA/BS students go after graduation, which MArch programs they are accepted to.
  3. MArch I believe you can follow a 4.0 year Berkeley BA with a 2.0 year Berkeley MArch, though it appears that advanced standing is discretionary. You might want to get further clarification on how long the MArch usually takes and what their policy is toward admitting their own BA grads into their MArch program.

UVA offers a continuous 4.0+2.0 BS+MArch. Admission to the MArch program is generally guaranteed to UVA BS holders in good standing and my understanding is that this offer holds for 2.0 years after graduation.

If you decide to go elsewhere for your MArch, both schools offer an excellent foundation.
