I am trying to decide between UC Berkeley vs U Michigan Vs UT Austin and planning to do an Undergraduate Math program along with Physics and Data Science. I would qualify for in-state at UT Austin. But, regarding the academic front and research opportunities, I feel that the other two are better. Please help me decide and if anyone has any inputs regarding the math department for all the three, please share as it would help.
You have options at three of the only seven public institutions included in this group of schools recommended for their mathematics programs:
At this point it comes down to where you want to live and school culture. Also of course affordability.
Answer that and then take a deeper dive.
You’re in-state for UT. It’s an outstanding institution in a wonderful college-town.
(a) I think UCB and UM are academic peers to UT
(b) If YOU think they are better, are they $150k+ better?
What in the world would you be paying for?
I have a D at Michigan and have had many relatives that have graduated Cal. Housing (after freshman year), class registration and changing majors at Cal can be very difficult. At Michigan, they’re not. Housing is relatively cheap and plentiful in Ann Arbor compared to Berkeley.
Student-teacher ratio at Michigan is 14:1. Cal is 20:1. Additionally, with AP credits, my D will graduate a semester early (savings of $28,000-ish) with two minors.
