Hello everyone, this coming fall I am going to begin my senior year of high school and I have my heart set on going into the medical field and I'm planning on going to med school. I lived in Alabama (I visited TN a lot too. We had lots of family there.) for six years and loved everything from the weather to the people, but I currently live in Las Vegas, NV and I visit California a lot and love it there too. My sister did a nursing internship at Vandy and absolutely loved it and they've sent me countless brochures and I think I really would enjoy going there. But Berkeley is just as amazing! Which school do you think is better and why?

Well, UCB is OOS for you, so would be expensive (EFC plus 23k per year plus full loans), so how much will your parents pay? with a modest EFC, you could easily find that you would get no free money at all.

Vandy is great, but can be intense as a premed…my nephew lasted a year as premed, graduated last year in ChemE…good grades, but not med school worthy.

Both schools are reaches for everyone.

Much will depend on your stats and how much your parents will pay each year…ask them for an amount.

What are your stats?

If you are a girl and want to go to med school, get your tush back to Alabama. both med schools are boy-heavy (especially USA) and they accept as many qualified girls with ties to the state as they can.

Do you need financial aid? Do NV residents get in-state tuition for CA public schools?

^^^
No, she would not get a discount or instate rate. and the UCs arent WUE schools, either. No discounts.

You haven’t told us anything about your stats. I used to presume that students who are looking at Vanderbilt and Berkeley are academically qualified, but I have seen enough posts now to know otherwise. I know that Vanderbilt, along with Washington U (St. Louis) is famously test-conscious, and favors high scorers, while Berkeley generally prefers high GPAs. These are both expensive, highly-selective, colleges, though, and so I recommend expanding your search beyond them. The UCs have no Early Action system - you have to apply in November, and most notifications are not sent out until late March. Assuming you have the qualifications to consider those two schools as reasonable prospects (check their admissions data to confirm as much, and figure out your UC-weighted GPA), then you should add Tulane, some other UCs (not just UCLA - they are at least as selective as UCB); U. of Miami.

UCB is horrible for pre-med, grade deflation, cut-throat competition, etc. don’t go there for pre-med. Idk about Vanderbilt ,
