UC Berkeley

Hi, I'm a Junior from the Bay Area (CA). I've always wanted to go to Berkeley and I just want to try to figure out what sort of chances I have at getting in.
I'm trying to get into the engineering department.

Extra curriculars
-Went to Austria for 3 weeks and studied German through the Actilingua program
-CSF member
-Honors Roll Awards
-I have a job
-(I plan to add tons of volunteer work this summer)
-attended the National Youth Leadership Forum on technology
-I will most likely be an intern at a biomedical company that my uncle works for this summer.
-I will participate in some road bike races if I get in better shape in the next month

What could also help-
My dad, both uncles, and my grandma + grandpa went to UC Berkley. My grandparents went on to found a junior college called JFK university which is growing pretty fast now and has 2 campuses in the Bay area. I can guarantee that I can get really good reccomendations through my grandma. My great great grandpa was the mayor of San Francisco.

SAT-
I took the SAT and did pretty poorly on it- about 1900

I can guarantee I could get it above 2100

I'm taking SAT II's this saturday.

nice family.

A wow family! Not a wow student.

No offense, but your grades are low for berkeley. You need around a 4.2 weighted to stand a decent chance. ECs are not exactly important for Berkeley. Berkeley does not require reqs.

Engineering - reach especially since your app shows no skills at engineering
Regular - between slight reach and reach since your grades are on the low side and your sats are too

I thought having relatives going to a college really helped your chances of getting in.

rollerb:

UCB: Reach (Engineering)

Yeah having relatives helps, but only for private schools really.

Relatives are not considered.

I'd say for UCB Engineering you're at a slight reach.

You need all As to get into berkeley... Seems that you are a mediocore/satisfactory student, apply to your local community college instead.

Ignore the above advice. It's silly to not even apply because you might be rejected. If you are rejected, then you can go the comunity college route and transfer if you wish, but that's your decision. Even if UCB is a reach, don't be afraid ever to reach. Just have a backup plan.
