my friend is 2 lazy to make an account so I will be doing it for him… (sigh)
anyways, he is class of 2018 like me and wondering what is better UC Berkely or UT Austin for chemcial engineering. these 2 schools are his top 2, and assuming he gets into both he doesn’t what 2 pick. He has amazing stuff- 1580 SAT, prolly NMF, 4.7 fully weighted, 4.0 UW, top notch awards , extracurriculars, leadership, etcc… super tryhard
Anyway we are form CA, so Cal is insttae, while UT Austin isn’t. If he gets into one, he will prolly go to other. I think his income is close to 80k.
also don’t say UC berkely automatically, even tho it is amazing and ranked 2nd in chemE. Also he is asian indian
pls respond
Tell him to make his own account.
As a non-Texas-resident from a family earning $80,000, UT Austin is an extreme reach for him (since he would need a rare large merit scholarship, not just admission).
It’s hard NOT to say UC Berkeley automatically, as the two schools are very much peers and have excellent Chem E programs, yet one is your in-state option and likely far more affordable.
Apply to both. If your friend gets admitted to both, then they can make a decision.
Austin as a town is nicer in environment, more relaxed and friendlier than Berkeley. Austin is easier to get around.
Berkeley is the better university, has a better engineering department and more prestigious.
Texas is larger and the campus is more crowded, has better sports and school spirit. 90% of students are from Texas.
Both schools are overcrowded and class sizes large. The average ACT at UT is 28, Berkeley 31.
Lots of high tech in both areas, however it can take hours to get from Berkeley to San Jose.
There is really no reason to go to Texas if you get into Berkeley. Unless you want to escape California. You will save money going to your state flagship university. You can move to Texas after you graduate.
Oklahoma, Alabama would give your friend free tuition.
If he applies at UT, make sure he isn’t lazy like he is here B-). The students who get the super small trickle of merit that is available at UT are almost all Honors applicants and there are extra essays involved in that process.
He should apply to schools like Alabama, where he will receive full ride scholarship or Olin or Coopers.
UCB and UTA will not give much FA as OOS, Don’t waste time/
If he is too lazy to make his own CC account he is probably too lazy to succeed in ANY ChemE program, much less at Berkeley or UT.
