UC Chance?

Hey,

I'm a senior who has applied to 6 UCs and well it's killing me. I need peace of mind regardless of what is said. I'm holding on to hope strongly and I think I need some real input from knowledgeable people. If I continue to go off of hope and self confidence I stand to break down when the time comes assuming all goes wrong. Thank you in advance.

(UC GPA according to transcript)
Capped: 4.150
W GPA: 4.35

School District GPA
4.083 Official
3.833 Unweighted

SAT: 1730 Composite
530 640 560
Math Reading Writing

Class Rank: 11/490

2 semester type school. I've taken 5 AP's and a lot of honors courses in 10th and 11th grade and I'm currently taking 4 now.

Outside of school I have volunteered at:

District Election Campaign - I was a volunteer/intern for a local election where we made phone calls, visited people door to door, and in general helped manage the day to day activities of the campaign.

Reading Foundation - Essentially I helped sort books that would then be sent off to children without access to reading materials.

Mosque Volunteer - Volunteer at my local Mosque. Perhaps not very unique, but it's mostly cleaning and learning more about the religion whilst doing so.

Clubs/Extracurricular:
Key Club - Vice President - Key Club is a volunteer organization under Kiwanis International that cultivates leadership and friendship among the youth. We essentially volunteer outside and inside of the school and I've netted about 400+ hours of volunteer work through Key Club. As vice president now I handle all the social events for the club and more importantly I am responsible for contacting and setting up events for our 70 members.

Auto Repair Club - Treasurer - Essentially I joined to just learn more about automobiles in general. I hoped to pick up some practical knowledge and skills that would serve me when I learned to drive. I liked it so much that I decided to run for treasurer and I basically managed the funds of the entire club.

Magnet Student Council - Secretary/Treasurer - I love student government so I joined our student council and I ran for Treasurer my first day there and won. I managed the funds for the magnet student body for an entire year. This year I'm the secretary and it's my job to keep record of everything from attendance to funds.

Academic Decathlon and Science Olympiad - I tried things out in high school not necessarily committing to everything. I joined the Science Olympiad my freshman year and became secretary. Then it disbanded and I joined the Academic Decathlon team.

Swim - I did it for one year to try my hand at a sport. I didn't know how to swim prior to joining and I squeezed through tryouts just barely. I worked my butt off during the season and got a few second and third place medals which isn't wonderful but it's a personal achievement I suppose.

Awards:
Apart from basic things like honor roll I have little.

-Won an environmental science expedition scholarship to travel and help scientists in a different area with their research.

-Swim team for 1 year didn't know how to swim, learned received 2nd and 3rd place medals.

My essays are arguably good at least in my opinion which I suppose doesn't hold much merit.

Gender: Male
Ethnicity: White

First one to go to college and first generation here.

Oh and I'm applying to political science/economics for most of the schools.

Thanks again I appreciate it tremendously.

I think your ECs are quite good…honestly everythings quite good…
but your sat 1 is kinda killing it… :frowning: but i think you have a shot for UCD
good luck

Thanks I appreciate the candor. I’d chance you back, but I have genuinely no idea how to even begin to rate you considering how vastly different everything is.

could i ask what you mean by UC GPA (capped/uncapped)? Your high school gpa is great, but SAT could be better especially for Berkeley/UCLA.
Berkeley: High Reach
UCLA: Reach
UCSD: Reach/Target
UCSB: Target
UCD/UCI: Low Targets
Merced/Riverside: Safeties
Just what i think.

I think the capped GPA is the maximum number of honors classes. The other one is just weighted. That’s how it appears on the transcript at least. It makes a point of specifying that it’s strictly UC only. Thanks by the way for the reply it’s appreciated.

UCLA/UCB: Reach
UCSD: Low Reach
UCI/UCSB/UCD: High Match
Your SAT could be higher but your EC’s and essays may give you that extra boost. Good Luck.

Why do you put UCSB above UCD and UCI? According to scatterplots, average high school GPA, etc., UCSB is significantly less selective than both UCD and UCI.

Unweighted GPA - “A’s” are worth 4 points. “B’s” are worth 3 points. And so on.
Weighted GPA - Add one point if the class is honors/AP/IB.
Capped UC GPA - Do not count 9th grade. You can only weight a maximum of 8 semesters.
