UC chances (below avg. student by CC std's)

After lurking CC for a while, it seems that the average GPA at CC is significantly higher than mines, pretty much a full 1.00. Well, i've decided to give it a try, and see what happens.

Applying for pretty much ALL the UC's, from Berekely and San Francisco down to SD. I have nothing to lose, right? Just an app. fee, but its worth a try, unless UC's have an application limit? What I study doesnt matter, ill just arrange for some sort of transfer later, hopefully.

About 3.00, gpa UW, a little higher since my school doesnt add in summer school grades. Yes thats right, a three point GPA.
Last time i checked, about 3.125 or so UC gpa, weighted with honors and AP.
Ap Scores so far:
AP US: 4
Psychology: 3

Taken honors and later AP classes all 4 years of HS. 9 Honors and AP classes after senior year's over. 4 years in english honors/AP. Not so hot in math.

Top 1/3 of graduating class (pitiful, yeah i know), Lets say 2XX/781 at high school in so cal (Alhambra). Currently a senior, graduating 2007. Asian.

2 years in service club, 2 years in red cross club, 1 year (possibly 2) in christmas volunteer thing. No sports. I used to play piano, but i forgot most of it.

SAT: Reading: 590 Math: 550 Writing: 540. Total: 1680 Will retake in November, aiming for at least 1800 or so. SAT II will be taken in Oct (US Hist. and Math IIC)

Im aiming for the middle class UC's, particularly Irvine and Davis, and SD if possible. I have a cousin who is alumni at Irvine, will that be favorable in any way? What are my chances there, and at like every UC? Sorry, its time consuming, but can somone please spell out my chances for every UC sans berkeley and LA. I think even Riversdie and Merced is a reach for me?

mofom4n:

UCB/UCLA: Super Reach
UCSD: Reach
UCI/UCD/UCSB: Slight Reach
UCSC/UCR/UCM: Match

what about UCSF? I havent heard much about them.

^
Very VERYYYY VERYYYY difficult/almost Impossible to get into right out of high school. Few people have gone straight from high school to UCSF because it's a medical school. Don't worry about UCSF.

forget about uc berkeley ucla and ucsd. they all have gpa's for the average admits of well over a 4.0 and sat's over 1300. they are out of the question. uci, ucsb and uc davis are reaches, and ucsc, ucr and ucm and slight reaches or matches. best of luck.

I wouldn't spend the money on UCLA. My kid had a 4.05 weighted and got turned down flat. Got into UCI. Didn't go there.

The only program at UCSF that even considers undergraduates is their pharmacy program--and I don't think they've taken a undergrad in five years. Nowadays, I think you are required to have two years of college to qualify to apply.

Just think of UCSF as an all graduate university.

Oh, and flopsy has your UC chances for the other schools exactly correct (as usual).

I see. I didnt know much about UCSF, and i didnt knwo it was a mainly graduate university. I know berkeley and LA are out of the question. If i applied to irvine, davis, and santa barbara, would it be accepted into at least one of those? OR should i look into CSU's?

If you can afford the application fees, apply to as many UC campuses as your son would be interested in attending. Your S best chance not being accepted is by not applying.

S had a similar GPA weighted, but slightly higher SAT scores. Last spring he was admitted to Davis, Irvine, Santa Barbara, and a slew of CSUS (Cal Poly, San Diego, Long Beach, etc.). He was applying as biomedical engineering or civil engineering major at most of the schools. The only school he applied to and was denied was UCSD as a pharmacology major with no second major choice. He did not apply to UCB or UCLA. In the end, he decided to enroll in a 6-yr pharmD program at a private university on the east coast and is extremely happy there.

Lots of his friends who had similar stats got into many of those schools listed above and are doing extremely well this fall as freshmen. (Not every kid who successfully matriculates is a brainiac or high achiever in hs.)

Berkeley and LA should be a stretch for you if you want to do things other than bio-sciences or engineering. UCSD would be a little more of a stretch if not.
