UC chances for an out-of-stater?

I am an Asian-American born in Nevada, where I still reside. I will be a Senior next year.

I carry a 3.83 cummulative unweighted GPA through Junior year, with a 3.83 in both semesters of Sophomore year and a 3.83 in my first semester of Junior yr and a 4.0 in the 2nd. Junior year I took 2 AP classes, Lang. and Comp. (scored a 4), and US History (3). As a Senior I will be taking 3 AP's Lit. and Comp., Government, and Statistics. There aren't very many AP classes offered at my school.

My class rank is probably somewhere around 25/510

As far as standardized tests go I have only taken the new SAT, in which I scored a cummulative 1950. Critical Reading= 710, Math= 630, Writing= 610. I plan on scoring a 2100+ after taking it again.

My extracurriculars are weak. I played football and basketball Freshmen year. Did next to nothing Sophomore year. And as a Junior I was a member of Key Club.

So what are my chances for the following schools? UCB, UCLA, UCSD, UCI, and UCD? I'd like to know my chances at USC as well. Thanks

Why go to UC schools? Then, you'd have to pay as an "out-of-stater" and that's a lot more expensive. Why don't you look for some private schools that are just as good?

UC schools are pretty hard to get into, from what I've heard, since there's A LOT of Asians applying and their in-state too.

Good luck!

You would maybe have a chance at the UCI/UCD level. Agreed, why would you pay $40K/tr for those compared to the privates you could get into? Smaller classes, less red tape, quicker graduation.

Bill5:

UCB: Reach (out of state)
UCLA: Reach (out of state)
UCSD: Slight Reach (out of state)
UCD: Safe Match (out of state)
UCI: Safe Match (out of state)
USC: Slight Reach

/Reach: UCLA, Cal
Match/Reach: UCSD, USC
Match: UCI, UCD,

The UC schools are going to be reaches for you not only because you're an out-of-stater, but also because you have few extracurriculars and your SATs and rank won't stand out among the other out-of-state applicants. The fact that you're Asian will also not help you, should you decide to disclose.

I agree that Irvine and Davis would be your best bets (though not safe in any way). I also agree, however, that you should be looking at private colleges instead of the UC system.

From what the OP has written, it's really really hard to defend UCD and UCI as a "safe match" or even a "match" at that. What his extracurricular activities amount to is absolutely nothing of importance or even merit. The writing score is a weak point, what are your SAT II scores? I don't think the applicant has anything to add to his points total for the UCSD formula, and the bar is set several hundred points higher for OOS. SD is absolutely a no, as Berkeley and LA. If you are from an underperforming school, then it doesn't help your case by being ranked only 25th. If you not from a disadvantaged background, then it's even more difficult being an Asian-American (if you haven't noticed, we have a surplus at the UCs). If you really want the UCs, you're going to have to include the likes of Riverside, Merced, and possibly Santa Cruz. Best of luck,
