Hey guys :]
I've posted a couple posts before... But finally I'm a rising senior prepping for those applications. With some updated stats, I was hoping that you could get me a somewhat final assessment.

School GPA: Approximately 4.3ish
UC GPA: 3.83 weighted

SAT: 1980 [will take it in October; most likely will achieve at least 2200 with all the studying I'm doing]
SAT Critical Reading: 640
SAT Math: 600
SAT Writing: 740 Essay: 12

Extra's:
-Academic Decathlon: 9-10 [achieved 1st place in speech & 5th in lit both years]
-Spanish Club: 9,11-12
-CSF: 9-12
-NHS: 11-12
-Interfaith Club: 9-12 [Secretary 10-12]
-Key Club: 9
-Co-Founded/Co-President of a city teen council where we volunteer in local community events and have personal meetings with the mayor and such which has enhanced my understanding of how the city works [about 140 hours or so]
-Achieved awards from the city for participation and service
-Serve on the American Cancer Society Committee
-Write a column for the local newspaper monthly
-Volunteered at the hospital for about 120 hours

Personal situation:
My mother is the only earning member of the family with a low salary for the 5 people we have living in our house; Parents are separated... had a bunch of personal family issues going on freshman-junior year which threw me off, hence the low gpa... I don't know if this will work to my favor...

I'd love to know my chances at the UC schools but mainly UCLA since that's my dream as I've mentioned in other posts. If there is anything I can do between now and November that may help me, feel free to let me know.

If you improve your sat to 2200 you will for sure get into all the uc's beside ucla and ucb. However your chances will improve dramatically and you will have a great shot.

UCB/UCLA: Reach
UCSD: Slight Reach
UCI/UCSB/UCD: Match
UCSC/UCR: Safe Match
UCM: Pretty Much Guaranteed Admissions (You Meet UC Minimum Requirements, You Get into Merced).

California state law requires that admission to the UCs be ethnicity and gender-blind. I think it was as a result of Proposition 202 that was on the ballot a few years back.

Oh, and Jibberlol, your teacher could have had an overall 3.5 GPA, but still have had a 4.0 UC GPA if you add in the 8 additional points for the honors courses, throw out the freshman year, and if the lower grades were in non-academic subjects. Also, your teacher could have received additional points since he came from a disadvantaged area, or because his parents never went to college, or because he excelled in one particular subject. You aren't taking any of this into account. Plus, as ckmets13 pointed out correctly, the standards for admittance were lower in the past than the standards are now.

P.S. Insulting people won't get you much sympathy--or long-term attention--on this site.

One other thing: As Golden Bear points out correctly, if you are in-state and meet the UC minimum requirements, you are guaranteed admission to one college (usually UC Merced since it is the only unranked UC at the current time).

However, it should also be noted that despite their high average GPAs, both UCSC and UCR have in recent years admitted all UC-qualified in-state individuals that applied to those schools since there were enough spots available. I have only recently learned this from my discussions with some UCSC administrators.

While this situation is unlikely to continue over the long-term, this means that over the short-term (probably the next one to two years), any UC-qualified in-state student can also get into either UCSC or UCR if they prefer those schools to UCM.

I think some of you have already figured this out--which may be why you are ranking people as UCSC/UCR/UCM--safety, when it may have seemed like they could only be sure of qualifying for UCM.

You definately have a shot. I know a guy who got in with 1960 SAT and like 4.0 weighted. But you have some financial problems and unique circumstances so hopefully UCLA will let you in.

i've also taken ap euro, ap ush, and senior year i'll be taking ap econ, ap spanish, ap english, ap calc and some other class. i took majority honors classes except for math analysis which was a regular class.
