UC chances - UCLA/UCSD

Asian female, Cali resident, Public HS

GPA (not sure which is best for chances so..)
-UC GPA: 4.389 (provided I calculated it correctly)
-Academic GPA 10-11: 3.94UW/4.83W
-Academic GPA 9-11: 3.93UW/4.79W
-Total GPA 9-11: 3.95UW/4.58W
-No rankings, but I'm somewhere in the top 4% (ELC)

SAT TOTAL = 1940 (retaking in Oct, aiming for 2100)
-CR 600, W 620, M 720

SAT II
-Math Level 2: 730
-US History: 650

APs
-AP Calc BC/AB Subscore: 5/5
-AP US: 5

ECs..not very much
-Piano (12 years, various awards)
-CSF (junior-senior yr)
-Discovery Science Center Volunteer in summer 05, it probably hardly counts
-Volunteer at an animal center (started this August)
-Honor Roll (since freshman year)
-School chorus (2 years)
-Also job as a piano accompanist since 2004

Current schedule (senior):
Physics (H)
AP Eng Lit & Comp
AP Econ
AP Am Govt
AP Stats
French 5 (H)

I want to major in American Lit/Culture or English or Literature/Writing, and minor in Math. No engineering for me.

Chances for all UCs, but mostly UCLA.
Also, is 2100 on the SAT really necessary or is somewhere around 2000 okay? I might retake again in Nov if my Oct scores aren't good. Because if I retake the SAT in Nov too then I won't take any more subject tests.

kelkyann :

UCLA: Low Reach/Match
UCSD: match

Kelkyann,

I agree with chillin ... if you brought your SAT scores up, that would give you some boost for UCLA, although their comprehensive review process will take into account some aspects of your EC's that you can bring out in your Personal Statement. I think UCSD is a Match, although not a slam dunk. Your ELC status will give you added consideration.

UCLA is different in that they accord more relative weight to the SAT Subject Tests than the other campuses. Depending on your intended major, they look as closely at some SAT Subject Test scores as the SAT Reasoning Test. If you have the chance to take each of the SAT I/II tests again, you may want to do that.

For the other UC's, you are a Match to Safety. Your ELC status will help assure this as well.

UCLA: Match-Slight Reach
UCSD: Match

The rest of the UC's, excluding Berkeley of course, are safe matches or more likely safetys.

kelkyann:

UCLA: Slight Reach
UCSD: Match

I'm wondering if you capped your UC GPA at 8 semester hours of honors/IB/AP courses.

Usually your UW GPA of 3.94 is the equivalent of a UC GPA of 4.26 to 4.27, not 4.37, but perhaps you took more courses than most people.

Anyway, the SAT of 1940 plus SAT IIs of 730 and 650 along with the UC GPA should give you good chances everywhere, but your ECs are just so-so.

I rate your chances as:
UC Berkeley/UCLA--Match to Slight Reach
UCSD--Match
UCSB/UCI/UCD--Safe Match
UCSC/UCR/UCM--Safety

Increase your SATs to 2000 and you are a match at all the UCs.

Calcruzer, I noticed the same thing and am guessing that the UC GPA hasn't been calculated correctly, but if the unweighted GPA is 3.94, it probably won't matter that much.

Correcting my earlier post... I wasn't thinking about UCB, which I also feel to be similar to UCLA, slight reach.
