Hi
Im currently a sophomore and my grades aren’t exactly stellar. What are my chances for any UCs. (I know this is kind of early, but Im already starting to stress out)
UC capped: 3.83
Weighted probably 3.83 too D:
Current 10th grade courses:
us History A/A
Honors English 2 B/B
honors precalc B/B
Honors chemistry A/A
Spanish 3 B/B
Tennis
My courses for Junior year Are:
Ap Calc BC
AP compsci
AP chem
AP World History
English 3
Tennis
Haven’t taken SAT yet, but on a practice PSAT I got 1460/1520 without studying.
My course list is considered rigorous, but not the most rigorous
ECS I have: (this is for when I apply)
Going to be Eagle Scout before I apply
Eco Club (3 years)
team America Rocketry competition(3 years, first year Captain of team)
Rocketry club (3 years)
Technology Student Association (3 years)
FBLA (2 years)
Piano~13 years, CM 10, ihave composed songs that have won at state level, but that was 6-8th grade, can I include this?
Science fair (County level, won an engineering award, but this was 8th grade, so can I include this?)
I was wondering my chances for mid tier UCs, like UCSD, SB or Irvine.
Thanks!
Forgot to say I go to an extremely competitive hs in California, ranked 40 nationally.
If you can perform as well as you did on the PSAT on the SAT and bring your GPA up next year, you will be a very competitive candidate for the schools you mentioned.
Good GPA. I suggest you specialize in one club and go president or something similar.
Looking at the 2020 UCSD class, I’ve noticed that they all have 4.0+ UC GPA. The highest I can go next year for UC GPA with all As( which I know is not possible) is 4.1. What can I do?
You do the best you can, apply and hope for the best. Although the average is 4.0+, if you check the decision threads, there are students thst were accepted with less than 4.0 GPA’s. If you have good test scores, outstanding essays and EC’s there is always a chance. It is about the whole package even though UC’s are GPA focused.
Good luck and the end of Junior year re-evaluate your list. Apply to schools to match your stats and not the other way around. Have a balanced list of Safeties, Matches and Reaches.
Does the fact that I’m going to apply for engineering-related fields alter my chances?
Yes, any competitive major will impact your chances. Some UC’s will accept directly into the major for Engineering (like UCR/UCI/UCD/UCSB)while others will accept into the university first then into your major (UCSD/UCB L&S, UCSC?). So for example UCSD, you could get into the school but not your major and then would have to take Pre-req classes, achieve a high GPA and then transfer into the major.
The more competitive major, the higher the stats needed.
well at university high school, your stats indicate you will get in
If UC’s admissions were just based on GPA and test scores, then predicting acceptances would be pretty straight forward. Throw in HS course rigor, EC’s and essays, then you add the subjective portion of the decision making which is unpredictable many times. Just do the best you can, apply and hope for the great outcome.
