UC Chances

I was wondering what my chances of getting into UCSB are.

CA resident, Jewish, live with a single parent, do they even care, mother makes 25k a year, father had a brain aneurysm and is now critically disabled, does this make a difference (essay topic along with Abroad study).

class rank 115/350 without this semesters 4.0 grades
SAT 1800
ACT 28

I slacked off during my first two years of high school and got a cumulative GPA of 3.038, but now I am getting down to Business and on my last report card got a 4.0 with three weighted classes, AP Bio, Pre Cal and APUSH. Will they like to see that i decided to work hard for junior year? When this year is over i should have a 3.5 cumulative GPA and be ranked higher accordingly. I am apart of my schools AFS, Spanish and World Without Boarders clubs. I am active in my Church, and occasionally volunteer. I have wrestled and played baseball throughout my high school career.

I know my resume so far is sub par for getting into a well known UC like UCSB but...

i am currently taking night school to get the required civics and econ out of the way, over the summer i am going to take English four and graduate from my high school in three years. i am doing this because i am going to study abroad for my entire senior year in Spain, where i would be taking a full work load. i am going abroad with AFS and i was wondering if THIS was going to be enough to make my application stand out. I know that UCSB is the headquarters for the entire UC college exchange program, and was wondering if this might have anything to do with my acceptance.

i will have taken three years of spanish,4 CP english, Chem, Bio, AP bio, APUS, up to pre cal in math, and ceramics. plus the courses that i take in Spain.

its my dream to hang with the Guacho, do i have a good chance?

I'm not going to chance you, but sympathize.

My grandmother recently had an aneurysm, and I FEEL your pain, trust me. It was only a month ago that she had it, and got surgery. Hope your Father makes it out okay also, and gets better. And yes, DEFINITELY mention it in your essay topic. That is a BIG struggle to get through. Also, are those SAT scores out of 2400?

If your essay is damn good, and you mention hardship and struggles, but keep a positive and determined outlook on it, you might have a VERY slight chance to get into UCLA; I'm saying VERY SLIGHT. I know two individuals who got in with a 1410 and the other lower than that out of 2400. Just work your essay if you're really determined to go there.

BEST OF LUCK. :) AND WISHES!

thanks, and yes its 1800 out of 2400

Your UC GPA may be a little bit below average. Perhaps if your father's disability made it harder for you to concentrate in school, (I'm sorry about your situation =/) mention it in your Personal statement. Otherwise, the fact that you greatly improved shows your determination to do well in high school. That should be very impressive to those going through your college applications.
