special circumstances: first semester of 10th grade there was a death in the family and my dad got layed off of work so i had to get a job

A death in the family? Was it your immediate family? Sorry for asking, but it will have an impact on how seriously the colleges take your special circumstances.

That's one crazy record, especially the (I'm sorry by the way!) death and the layoff. That puts alot of pressure on a kid and pulling off good grades, AP scores like that, that's damn good. The whole extracurricular thing is damn good too. The only weak thing I see is your SAT score, if you can improve that, then you're more than set. right now I would say you have a good chance of getting in but I would suggest taking the SAT one more time.

You'll get into UCI, UCD, UCR, and a bunch of others. Don't worry. The only serious weakness I see is your SAT I score, but you're planning to retake this anyway and you have a lot of time ahead of you to prepare.

Oh, and make sure you express yourself fully in your personal statement. Let the colleges see you're an applicant who can overcome whatever hardship placed before you. They will probably take into consideration your special circumstances.

oh dang, sorry i just read ur circumstances.. you can get into a lot of schools. apply for harvard, even. im not joking on that one.. harvard really takes personal issues into consideration. (chance is low, but hey.)

If UCI is a match/slight reach, then wouldn't UCSB and UCSC also be slight reaches. Sorry if I'm wrong, but I thought UCSB and UCSC were at least as hard to get into as UCSD. Are you interested in any colleges besides UCs?
