UC Chanes for friend

My friend currently has a 3.58 UC GPA in his sophomore year, he is now a junior. He got a 2050 SAT, and he can bring it up to around a 2150 or 2100 what UC GPA does he need junior year to get into UCSC/UCR/SDSU/Cal Poly Slo for computer science freshmen year he got a 3.9(no Uc weighted honors)

Freshman year is not considered.

He will need a 3.9 UC GPA (10-11) to be solid for UCSC
He will need a 3.7+ UC GPA (10-11) to be solid for UCR/SDSU
He will need a 4.1+ UC GPA (10-11) to be solid for Cal Poly Slo (Their computer science is very selective)

As of now, Cal poly looks far off unless he drastically improves his GPA.

SLO does consider Freshman year grades in their GPA calculation which will help your friend. I agree with @LomoKuan’s assessment of what kind of GPA is needed for the best chances at these schools. CS at SLO has around a 10-15% acceptance rate which is comparable to UCLA/UCB.

Any ECs?

@Gumbymom do you think his sophomore year grades will hinder him

@Gumbymom wont a 3.8 freshmen GPA hurt him not help him since SLO’ s average is like a 4.1 or 4.2 even though it is higher then his sophomore year 3.58

I think SLO will be a Reach even if he continues with his upward trend. He looks good for UCSC/SDSU and UCR. There is no harm in applying to SLO if it is his #1 choice he should consider ED. Having a few Reach schools on the list along several solid match and safety schools will give him a balanced list. He should add SJSU/CSULB/CPP and CSU Fullerton to his list.
