Here is something I'm a bit confused on. I'm about to do the whole UC online application come October and the first essay question "What is your intended major? Discuss how your interest in the field developed, and describe any experience you have had in the field. etc." doesn't really sit well with me.

I'm applying to almost all of the UC's (except merced, UCSC, and UCSD) and my problem is that I have different majors for different UC's. The current list is....

UCB - Mass Communications
UCLA - Music History
UCR - Music and Culture
UCSB - Communications
UCD - Communications
UCI - Film and Media Studies

Am I supposed to craft an essay that encompasses all majors, or pick my favorite? What do you guys think?

but you only have one prompt to talk about the development of your indicated major. Well I guess one could talk about the other proposed majors in the open-ended essay.

Wait, is the UC application applicable to all UC's at the same time? Will the UC's be able to see your applications to other UC's? Does it have to be the same essay?

"Wait, is the UC application applicable to all UC's at the same time?"

Yes, it is one common application for all UCs to be filled out only once. In addition to being a great school, this is why UCLA recieves such a great amount of applications. In short, people who are likely going to the lower tier UCs may easily check off the UCLA box on a whim.

"Will the UC's be able to see your applications to other UC's? Does it have to be the same essay?"

Since it is only one application with the same responses, all the UCs know what you sent to the other UCs. Yes, it has to be the same essays (The prompts are available now and are still the same from last year).

Hope this helped. Good luck in the transfer process.

CardinalFocused, I've completed IGETC and I'm just now finishing all the pre-reqs for communication majors. I have taken a lot of music classes for fun, and I happened to have all that stuff completed beforehand without knowing it.

With a 3.84 and all pre-reqs completed it's really between UCLA and Berkeley, with the others thrown in as safeties. I'd do communications at UCLA, but the avergage admitted gpa for communications is is 3.87, while music history is 3.4. I'd take the risk, but I figure Berkeley is already the big risk, and I'd hate to not get into either. So I'm left with my current dillema.

Maybe write something about how I like to "communicate" with "music"? blah

Yah perhaps a essay fusing the two interests would work best in your situation. Nice gpa btw =D

Good luck with the personal statements. Oh and remember we still have over two months to turn in our UC applications so you've alot of time to think about the best way to approach the essay situation.

i'm turning everything in the first day i can. i have heard that the sooner they get your app the better chance you have. i have also heard of something called early decision. does anyone know if the UC's have anything like that goin on?

a question, sort of relating to the topic, when do the UCs make their decisions? during the spring after this falls semester? so does the GPA for this fall actually count?

I've never heard anywhere that when you turn in your app correlates with your chances of admission. Where did you get this info? Oh and no their is no early decision for UCs. I guess you could be talking about spring transfer though...for that you apply in July...

Hmm... Guitarshark, I wonder where you got that "the earlier, the better" tidbit? I doubt highly that that's true. As Cardinalfocused said, take your time. I remember that I was tweaking and polishing that personal statement until the midnight of November 30 last year... LOL. And still there was an error in the essay I didn't catch! But I'm not saying to wait until the last minute; just make sure you're not rushing anything.
