Iam a Junior in HighSchool and looking into majoring in Mechanical Engineering. My academic history is average- UC Gpa of 3.4 and Im taking the SAT later this week and planing on getting at least a 1300 so I can compensate for my GPA. Some EC’s include Head of Aeronautical Engineering Club and Secretary of Science and Spanish Club. Im on the edge of average and thought that if all else fails Ill just do a 2 year transfer from a CC.
Sophmore:
AP Physics scored a 2
Junior:
APUSH-IN PROGESS
SENIOR:
AP CALC-AB/BC-IN PROGESS
AP Enviro-IN PROGESS
I’ve compiled a some list of some UCs and CSUs I would like to attend:
UC Irvine
UCSD
Cal Poly Pomona
Cal Poly Slo
San Jose State University
Any Suggestions and pointers would be greatly appreciated.
All the CSU’s except SLO use the eligibility index to rank applicants by major.
(CSU/UC GPA x800)+(SAT Math + CR).
SJSU publishes their EI thresholds each year so you can compare your EI to this year’s for an idea of how you compare.

For CPP, your GPA is a bit low but if you have a high SAT, then you do have a decent chance for an acceptance.
For SLO, they use an MCA point calculation (explanation in the link) and they also use 9-11th grades in their calculation. The ME acceptance rate at SLO is about 12-14%, so I believe SLO along with UCI and UCSD will be Reaches just based on your UC GPA.

UC’s happen to be very GPA focused, so below the average of 4.0+ will hurt your chances.

I would include your local CSU since you get priority and add a few more CSU’s to your list such as CSULB, CSU Fullerton, Sac State, Chico State to name a few. If you are set on going to a UC, then using TAG and transferring after 2 years is a very good option.
Try to get a good score on the SAT, at least 1300+ and if possible try to bump up your GPA. Consider taking some summer courses at your HS or local CCC.
Good Luck.
If you keep your current scores (with your estimated SAT pulling off), UCR is a low reach and and UCM is a high match.
