This is what I have so far, can anyone calculate my UC/CSU gpa for me? I don't know how to do it. It would be greatly appreciated.

Well, first you will mostly drop the freshman grades. I say “mostly” because Cal Poly SLO asks for them, but I don’t think any other UC/CSU does (and they are not included in the overall GPA). Are you in CA? if so, you need to go to UC Doorways web site to look up your school and see if classes such as “Intro to Business” and “Photography” and “Adventure Ed” are included in the a-g courses. If not, they don’t count. I don’t think you get the extra weight for the D grade in an AP class, so that one counts as 1 point. How come you have two grades listed for some of your sophomore classes and one for others? If you are on semesters, there should be two grades for each. With answers to these questions, we can help you better to calculate the GPA.

No, I’m not from California, so out of state resident.
I have two grade for some of the classes because they’re year long, so I put first semester/second semester, if that makes sense. I’m currently in my second semester of junior year, so I don’t have my final grades for junior year second semester yet.
Please help

So some classes are one semester each and some are for the whole year? Do you only get one grade for the whole year then? I am not sure how that works, as my kids get semester grades. Since you are out of state, you do not get any extra weighting for honors classes, only AP ones. Here is a bit more information:
http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/freshman/out-of-state/index.html</a></p>

Is there a guidance counselor at your school who can help you with this?

I get semester grades too. I have 5 core classes, which are foreign language class, english classes, math classes, social studies classes, and science classes. So for example, english 10 honors, I put B+/B.
The B+ was from first semester and the B was from second semester.
Yes, I’m able to get help from my counselor.

One more thing I want feedback on.
With my grades, 25-28 on ACT, extracurricular, overall GPA from 9th-11th 3.3(UW)<—raising that to a 3.6 by the end of the year… Do you think it’s possible to get into UCI or CSULB?

jpkim 123: You would need a ACT of 30+ to counterbalance the GPA of 3.6 for UCI. For CSULB you probably have a good chance depending upon your major. STEM majors require a Eligibility index (EI) of 990 or more.
To calculate your EI: (ACT Composite x 10) + (UC/CSU GPA x 200) All the CSU’s use this except CAL POLY SLO.

UC’s really don’t like to see any D’s. That is pretty harmful so I wouldn’t expect an admission. You have to calculate your UC gpa to see if you meet the minimum anyway, for OOS it is 3.4 and that is a minimum. Accepted students usually have higher.

Thanks for all the responses!

So for UCI a 3.6 with a 27 on ACT would be quite a reach?

My major would either be criminal justice or nursing/medicine. How about that for CSULB?

GPA calculation: <a href=“Cal State Apply | CSU”>Cal State Apply | CSU;

Nursing is impacted at every CSU. All majors are impacted at CSULB. So the threshold will be higher than the baseline threshold, but you won’t know how much higher beforehand.
http://www.calstate.edu/sas/publications/documents/impactedprogramsmatrix.pdf</a>
http://www.calstate.edu/sas/impactioninfo.shtml</a></p>

Take AP world history over again if you are able, using a UC APPROVED online course and make sure it is the AP course because regular won’t replace the D grade and redoing AP will. UCs should drop the D then, and replace it with the new grade.

I’m really confused on the a-g courses. I don’t know specifically what grades for what classes I should be putting into the GPA calculator.

The a-g course requirements are described here:
http://www.calstate.edu/sas/publications/documents/csu-uc-a-gcomparisonmatrix.pdf</a>
<a href=“University of California Counselors”>University of California Counselors;

If you are uncertain what category your courses are in, take a look at http://doorways.ucop.edu for a list of a-g courses for each California high school. If your high school is not in California, you can check the lists for California high schools to see what similar courses are classified as.

Here is the UCI admission profile for last year for gpa/act/sat - yes it looks like quite a reach. sorry

Is CSULB a reach for me also???

jpkim, any ‘D’ not remediated on your transcript will be a non-starter at either a UC or a CSU.
You will not be considered eligible because you will not have fulfilled the a.-g. requirements for these public schools.Of course you can retake the World History, as some have mentioned above.

What I am interested in, however, is why these two specific public schools are of interest to you?
Perhaps there are some other schools in California that would fit the bill?
Remember that private schools can be more forgiving about GPA and courses taken, as they do not have to adhere to the same formula as the public schools.
Since you say on another thread that money is not an issue, start checking out privates
that have similar qualities to the UC/CSU schools you’ve targeted.

The thing is I have 1.5 credits of world history. I took a full year of world history and got B’s & took a semester for AP world and got a D. I’m interested because I know UCI had a good criminal justice program and CSULB has good nursing programs. What are some good california private schools in those two majors?

Other good criminal justice programs in California include: University of the Pacific, Azuza Pacific, Santa Clara, Sonoma State (public), Chapman (through their Law, Justice and Social Control minor), and Whittier (through their sociology dept.). On the West coast, other schools would include: U Portland, Seattle U and Gonzaga.

Consider that even if a schools does not have a dedicated criminal justice major, associated majors with concentrations in criminal justice would include Sociology, Psychology, Anthropology, Law and Society.

Non-West coast schools that excel in this major include: John Jay in NY, DePaul in Chicago, Drexel in PA, and U of New Haven.
