I submitted my SIR for UC Davis but am having second thoughts because of my allergies. I have severe environmental and food allergies. Does anyone know how bad Davis can be for allergies? I’ve heard that sometimes it gets so bad that it’s debilitating and that you can barely function. I was admitted on appeal to UCSD so I have that option but the only gotcha is that I’m not guaranteed housing.

I live in the Sacramento Valley, and I never had allergies in my life until I lived here. It took about 7 years until I developed them. The Sacramento Valley is not a good place for people with allergies. Where do you live now?

What's an SIR?

I think your health willl be much better at UCSD.

I live in the East Bay (Castro Valley - near Pleasanton and Hayward). There's some hilly, grassy areas but no where near what Davis has. Maybe I'll graduate before 7 years when the allergies kick in!! :) SIR is the Intent to Register contract. If only I had the guaranteed housing in UCSD . . . .

Do you know of others whose allergist got worse after going to Davis or Sac?

hey iluvmusak, i agree with kinshasa, la jolla is a better area than davis for allergy sufferers. that's too bad about the housing situation at ucsd. isn't there a waitlist for housing? what do others do? does ucsd admit more students than they have housing for?

They have a waitlist but they won't even tell you where you are on the list until June. They have more people than spaces even for the people that are guaranteed housing. They alleviate the overcrowing by cancellations, people that don't give deposits and rescinded admissions. After they resolve the overcrowding then the people on the waitlist get assigned spaces, if there are any. Major bummer!

I had allergies all my life when I lived in Sacramento. I haven't had any trouble in San Francisco.

I am a UC Davis alum, and I did have trouble with allergies in the spring time there. The big offenders are the olive trees that grow there: olive pollen is very allergenic.

Your allergy situation will probably be better at UCSD.
