UC Davis Appeal 2023 Freshman

I appealed, anyone else in the same boat?

I personally do not know about the appeal process, but don’t ignore community colleges. Use them to your advantage and transfer into Davis later.

Agree, if you really wanted Davis and didn’t get in, you can always TAG into the school and get guaranteed admission via CCC.

I am a Sacramento native, so I live pretty close to UC Davis. It is truly the only college I wished to attend, I mean, my entire family went through the UC system and my dad even attended UC Davis. I have been accepted to SFSU, SJSU, and SSU, and for that I am very grateful. UC Davis, the only school I really cared to get into, denied my admission. I have thought about it long and hard, and I have decided that appealing my denial is what I wanted to do, it is just who I am as a person. I couldn’t just accept defeat, so I took the last possible step I could to be admitted. I did have some compelling new information to offer, so I used that to my advantage, and now I wait. I took to this sub to see what people had to say. I’m not expecting to get in, but I just had to try. I’m still waiting to hear back from UCLA, and UCSD, and I don’t really want to attend any of those to be honest. I’m a pretty well-rounded student, and I had probably a 50/50 of getting into Davis. Anyways, I have a few questions about this subject:

Has anyone else appealed this year?

Has anyone been successful with appeals in the past?

Thanks for taking the time to read, I’d love to hear peoples opinions.

@Collegestress628 I am sorry you were denied. It is hard when your heart is set on a place and it doesn’t turn out the way you want. You are not the only person denied a spot at UC Davis, or denied a spot at your first choice school. UCs are very hard to get into anymore and much harder since your family members were attending. If you really ant to go to Davis, you should investigate the community college route and do the TAG program. It really is the best bet for Davis if you don’t get in as a freshman.

About the appeals process: you have to have a very compelling reason to appeal, otherwise there is no point and also importantly, you will be wasting their time. It can’t just be: “all my family went there, I really wanted to go, I have dreamed about it forever…”

We looked into appealing a couple of years ago, and I believe the Davis website stresses that the compelling reason you are appealing should be related to academic info that has come to light since the application was submitted. For instance, you re-took that ACT and your score went from a 28 to a 35. Or you are taking a very difficult math class at the community college and received an A last semester and that wasn’t part of the application you submitted. Even with compelling information, they don’t often grant appeals is what we were told.

Good luck to you. You will end up where you are meant to be!

My son just appealed, fingers crossed. My daughter who is about to graduate from there actually has 2 friends who were admitted by appeal.

I appealed, does anyone mind giving me their opinion on if they think I will get accepted?

@hopefulstudent07 : What was the basis of your appeal?

My reason to appeal not originally stated in app:
Family drug abuse in home ever since my brother came home in the beginning of my sophomore year and there was also a lot of fighting that kept me awake and from my studies. Uncle passed away from drug abuse at the same time but I have started to attend therapy and use art as an outlet
I said I wanted to go to Davis to get away from my family’s problems pretty much.
Grades began to drop beginning of sophomore year until second semester of junior year. First semester of senior year I earned a 4.4 GPA
I did own up to my mistake and said it was my fault that I let the violence and drugs in my home keep me from getting good grades.
I also got 4 recommendation letters from umbrellas AP art history teacher, English Honors II teacher, Anatomy honors teacher, and my physics honors teacher
@Gumbymom

Haha did not mean to say “umbrellas”

My daughter was rejected, wrote an appeal, and was accepted 4/30. Very happy gal!

@cscalpolymom: Can you elaborate on the basis for her appeal? It will help future applicants. Thank you.

Does anyone know when or if they are still going to release appeal decisions? Having little hope each day that passes

From what I hear, it could be as late as the end of June until we hear appeal decisions. I’ve already committed to another college, but I’m still curious whether I’d get into Davis. If I do, I’ll have to rethink whether I’d like to end up going there or not.

My appeal was a unique one, there was information that I couldn’t put on my application because I was not legally allowed to, but I got a disclosure agreement for that info after the UC application was due.

I’ve appealed here and I’m still on the waitlist at UC Berkeley. I’ve committed to another school (a private college), but I’m losing hope. Davis and Berkeley are my top schools.

The basis of my appeal was on receiving an extraordinary award soon after I submitted my application.

Hey guys. I just wanted to inform you guys that we will be hearing back from Davis in Early or Mid-June, even if you submitted your appeal like a month ago, which I did. This doesn’t really affect me because I recently got accepted to UCI from an appeal (initially rejected) which I SIRed to. But to those still anxiously waiting, good luck y’all and have a great rest of your senior year!!! I’m pooped from the AP Exams.

@Exultnt You got in through an appeal! Congratulations, what was your basis for an appeal and when did you hear back from UCI?

Yes! Thanks! I had an internship at UC Davis which I previously wasn’t able to elaborate on and I also got a 4.4 Weighted GPA last semester, which is the highest I ever got. I also was able to put in 4 letters of recommendation and my senior project (got a 100%). I heard back on May 1st which was very surprising, and I was able to guarantee housing on the last day possible  I initially was rejected but climbed after hard work to an acceptance at my top school!

@cscalpolymom it is interesting, and good news, that UCD released Appeals replies prior to their stated May 1st and beyond pronouncement.

Hi Everyone. 300owl here. I also appealed but I did that in 2016 and i’m typing this message as a 3rd year undergraduate at Davis. My appeal was accepted. If you have any questions then message me and I’ll help best I can.
