@aggiemomtobe congratulation for your daughter!! So happy for both our daughters get in!

How and where do you look to see if you got regents and / or honors?

@collegemom111111, second paragraph in the congratulations letter on your uc Davis admission portal

Something seriously wrong!
5 students I know get waitlisted:

GPA: 4.2 - 4.7
SAT: 1520 - 1580
All 5 took at lease 2 SAT ll, and all get perfect 800s
Many APs most in 5s
Many leadership and ECs

Looks UCD went extreme on yield protection. My view itā€™s 100% unethical for denying hard working students rights to choose. Not sure itā€™s legal?

Any comments?

@Ranipetgirl Thank you. Looks like my D didnā€™t get regents or honors.

@fairadmin Back in 2013 my older son got into UC Irvine and graduated already with a great job a month after graduating in 2017. Then my younger son did very well with all the cool numbers, played sports had okay volunteer hours and we think he did decent on his essays. He was denied all the UC Schools we thought he would get in or waitlisted. He was shocked as we noticed students with lower GPA and SAT scores got in. We also were aware that his major in bio-chemistry was very impacted or competitive. This year so far my daughter has been able to get into many of the UC schools thus far for fall 2019. We believe her essays and writing skills, GPA, SAT scores and volunteer hours superceded her brothers. Its not an exact science and I was confused last year too. Also the type of major your trying to get into could be a factor. Basically we kind of learned from what happened last year in 2018 and were determined to work harder and make adjustments. So far we have been excited and not surprised up to this point. We still await UC Irvine and UC Santa Barbara. Ive learned that its not always one thing, but maybe just a combination of everything. WE were up in 2013, down a bit in 2018, and are excited once again in 2019. its a crazy roller coaster ride but hopefully students spread themselves out and applied to 10 or more schools instead of just a few. I feel you though!! So many applications, so few spots. Leadership positions can also be a factor. Its competitive out there. Good luck out there!

@Brandon2000 thx for commenting. These 5 students are really higher achievers. Some already got accepted by other UCs Regents/honors, e.g. UC Berkeley. UCD waitlisted those students based itā€™s own perception that these students maybe wonā€™t attend. We looked all the posts here, and are assured all the 5 waitlisted are at up qualifying area in their applied majors.

Honestly, for those who are looking back at this forum for next year, I think it just has to with how you set yourself apart is the key to a hopeful admission. Of course, anyone can have the most perfect statistics, which is amazing and admirable, but is it amazing enough to be more valuable than someoneā€™s own personal story? Obviously, donā€™t get me wrong, one has to keep up with solid grades and SAT scores, but just think about it. The UC admissions officers read so many of the same application, they know how to pull apart of what fits and what doesnā€™t. Therefore, reflect who you truly are in your essay. I know this might be extra, but I spent the whole Summer planning, writing, and editing my essay to make sure that my story(what makes me different than any other applicant), is reflected in my application. To sum it all up, be well-rounded, be you, and show, donā€™t tell. Donā€™t forget that the pain of not knowing if I could is greater than the fear of rejection.

@sew5401 , I 100% agree with this statement. There are a multitude of factors that we donā€™t see that really accounts into your admission decision. Who you are, and what you have accomplished given your socioeconomic background will weigh more heavily than any score you can get. Your grades are only the line of sufficiency to get you into a selective college like the UCs, the rest is decided by your personality and your accomplishments, and as a result, you can only get in by standing out. Do you do things that other students donā€™t usually do? Do you start your day by doing the little things like making your bed? Have you gone to third-world countries to make a impact in your potential major? Have you helped other people beyond volunteering locally? These are all factors that can really impact your application (Hence, holistic), and I personally believe it takes a special type of sacrifice to really accomplish these things, and I admire these individuals :D. It may seem very hard at first, but what it really entails is being yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you someone else; and trust me, its possible. I can advocate from experience, as a first-generation student who has to compete against so many amazing, talented, and inspiring individuals, I also sometimes felt Iā€™ve lost, misstepped, or failedā€“ but never defeated. Instead of trying so hard to mold my passions to the world around me, I aspired to mold the world to my passions, and thereby, I feel like Iā€™ve really influenced more people in a positive way while being myself. So, never give up!

Congratulations to everyone who was admitted, you deserve to celebrate :D. For those who didnā€™t get accepted, keep fighting and looking up, you will find the place you loveā€“ have faith in yourself! I apologize for the preaching, but I feel like I should clarify on how the holistic process works (to a tad) in selective colleges. You can probably tell, I love philosophy (haha)! :stuck_out_tongue:

Theres a good quote for this topic:

Provost award
@ Gumbymom: Your posts are very informative. Does provost award remain valid until the enrollment cut off date 1 May or it has another cut off date and expires soon if not accepted by then? My DDā€™s awards tab does not show acceptance cut off date and thus this query.
