Hello!
I was just accepted into UC Davis under the communication major for fall semester. I was wondering if anyone had any information about this major, because I can’t seem to find much online apart from the official school’s website. I heard that this isn’t considered a very serious major at UCD just from the little things I did hear from people around me, which worries me because I’d like to be surrounded by academically driven classmates and be studying something worthwhile.
I originally wanted to major in business administration, but the other colleges I was accepted into do not offer it either and I am really interested in attending UCD. I saw that there is a managerial economics major which seems close to business, however, I am not very interested in focusing that much on economics/quantitative methods (which is why I ended up picking communication instead).
Any information about UCD’s communication major or the managerial economics major would be really helpful, thank you! : )
(also sorry if I posted this twice by mistake I’m not sure what I’m doing lol)
UCD student here! I know communication is a pretty popular major at UCD and there are academically driven students everywhere in all majors. It just depends on who you choose to surround yourself with. I’m not a Communication major so I can’t really go into detail how the department is but overall, Davis is a good school should you choose to attend. I also have friends in Man Econ and they love it. The thing about UCs as a whole is the only schools that actually have a business program for undergrads are UCI & Berkeley. Other schools are mostly Econ or something similar. If you want to attend an actual business program in the UC system, you’d have to wait until you graduate and go to their grad school. It’s also why many people encourage students who want to do business to look into CSUs because CSU’s business program is essentially better than UCs (as UCs don’t have actual undergrad business program). I came from a CC and you have no idea how many counselors I’ve met that told students they shouldn’t just look at UCs because in the end, unless you’re going to UCI or Haas (Berkeley), alternate programs may not be as great as let’s say going to SJSU or SDSU where business is more known at those schools. Good luck though!!!
Thank you so much for your reply! I’m definitely leaning towards UCD right now, so I’m glad to hear it’s a good school and that managerial econ might be a possible choice for me if communication doesn’t work out. I applied to one CSU too but never really thought about the point you brought up about their business programs. hmm I guess I have a lot to think about. Thank you again!!
congrats!
Davis has gotten pretty picky so, typical student was admitted with pretty high stats. A 4.1 and 1350 (about the median now) suggest everyone attending the school is pretty bright and takes school seriously. If you head there thinking Communication or any other major will be a cakewalk, you will be in for a rough time.
Managerial Econ is a pretty reasonable approximation of Business elsewhere.
