UC Davis Fall 2015 Transfer Thread

Personally, I think you’ll be able to make the switch, GS to psych. You have all the pre-reqs completed, right? I can’t guarantee, but I don’t see why you couldn’t. I know psych is selective, but I still think it’s doable.

@lindyk8 I definitely wouldn’t be able to switch into Psych at UCLA. You’re not allowed to switch into impacted majors. However, Cognitive Science is not impacted. But I also have not finished the prereqs for that, so I would have to take classes for about a year before I could officially switch my major, and that’s if they let me. /:

Actually @sammycatt, that’s not always true, even though that’s the mantra. You sometimes can, esp if it’s the same dept. I’ve heard it done two times now and two advisors in depts told me it could be done. Yours aren’t the same depts, but they are in L&S.

It’s still a gamble, unless you could find someone who did it. Why not call the psych dept and ask outright? Approval has to come from the depts.

@lindyk8 You’re right. It’s worth a shot. I think when I go to the campus I’ll go to the department and find someone to talk to. I also have three psychology professors who all got their doctorates in Psychology at UCLA offering to write me letters of recommendation, so hopefully that might help? I know they’re usually like “we don’t do letters of recommendation” but I’m desperate haha.

I got accepted as well! Figured I should add my stats as I think I’m a special case.
Major: Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
GPA: This is where it gets kinda finicky. From the school I am at now, I had a 3.4 when I applied. Now I have a 3.22. But, if you factor in my old school, that becomes a 3.09 now, 3.16 when I applied.
TAP: No
ECs: A few, but not many.
IGETC: Complete
Prereqs: Missing only physics.
Applied: UCD, UCSC, UCI, UCSB
Accepted: UCD, UCSC
Pending: UCI, UCSB
I’m honestly a little shocked I got accepted. The reason I say this is because of my previous academic history. I did get academically dismissed from a school, and every single UC I applied to ask to see my previous transcript, to verify all of the info. I worked hard to get back from that point, but still. I’m quite glad!
Congrats to everyone who got accepted as well!

LOL i was super surprised i got accepted…especially with my missing prereqs for…COMPUTER SCIENCE?!?
Major: Computer Science
GPA: 3.82
ECs: a bunch, including a job and an internship
IGETC: nope
Prereqs: missing 4 (physics series and advanced c++)
Applied: UCI, UCSB, UCD, UCSD, UCLA, UCB
Accepted: UCSB, UCD
Rejected: UCLA
Pending: *UCSD (?), UCI, UCB

*i was initially rejected by ucsd but now i think they’re reevaluating my application? i emailed to ask why i was rejected and they told me it was because i didnt fulfill the minimum transferable course requirements! the thing is i actually did satisfy it through my ap credits but they forgot to count it

ACCEPTED WITH REGENTS!

UC GPA: 3.82
IGETC:Yes
TAG: No
Major: Psychology
Pre-reqs:Completed all Spring 2014
Applied: UCB, UCLA, UCSD, UCD, UCI, UCSB
Accepted: UCSB, UCSD, UCI (Regents), UCD (Regents)
Rejected: None
Waitlisted: UCLA
Pending: UCB
Activities: Tutor and TA for physiological and intro psychology, international club, badminton.
Awards: 2 CCC scholarships, dean’s list, Awards from work
Work history: Assistant manager at food chain, teller at a bank, jamba juice, kfc, jc penney.
Essay: It was informal but it came from the heart. I talked about how I worked 2 jobs and went to school full time for 4 years. I also talked about my TA and research experience and how I want to be a professor and a researcher.

@isaganilagundino Where in the portal did it say that you were selected for Regents?

I know 3 ppl that turned down ucla and choose Davis to attend due to their campus and their specific majors. So there’s that. Just remember ppl…there are a ton of factors outside of strictly prestige to select the best school for you personally. Don’t go somewhere because “most ppl’” say you should…go where you feel most comfortable becuz at the end of the day we are all getting world class educations whether it’s from UCSB, UCLA, UCD, Berkeley, UCI, etc.

@sammycatt I have to say davis sounds like a better fit. Betting that you’ll be able to squeeze through a crack in the bureaucracy and switch into an impacted major at UCLA seems like a horrible gamble. Davis has a really nice campus, it’s only two years, and I found when I transferred between community colleges that moving to a new area for schooling can actually really pay off socially. One of the (several) reasons I’ll be picking UCLA (among the UCs) whether I get into cal or not is because I grew up not that far away from berkeley and now believe it would be better to head somewhere new to go with my new school. You’ll be over your homesickness before you know it.

Besides, I don’t want to get preachy, but you’re going to grad school, you got accepted into UCLA and davis, so you’re clearly pretty serious academically - do you really want to make a decision about which college you go to, which could have a huge influence on your future path, based on the fact you might miss your friends?

@UniversalSnip You make a really good point. And the more I think about it the more I feel like Davis just makes more sense. I guess the fact I could potentially be moving far away is finally dawning on me and I’m having a mini freak out. Choosing UCLA just because “ohmygod it’s UCLA” is a really bad way of making a decision. I know if I went there and wasn’t able to switch my major I would really, really regret it. I’ve also been looking more into Davis and finding they have a lot of great research opportunities. I think I’m just making excuses, and need to get it together and just visit Davis before I make any rash decisions.

I’ll probably still visit the department and ask about the process of changing majors, just because it doesn’t hurt to ask. But if anything, it will probably only confirm the notion that Davis is the better fit. Besides, I can always try UCLA again for grad school!

Thank you for the advice.

@Samantha19 I got in UCLA and I’m choosing UC Davis for the reasons you mentioned.

@Samantha19 Good point.

@sammycatt Fellow Psychology major! Have you visited Davis? I drove up the other day with my boyfriend and it was BEAUTIFUL! Totally different from what I had expected, it is the perfect college town. I live in Los Angeles now, and it is a zoo here. I’m choosing this out of SB and SC. I already have the “class of 2017” wallpaper up on my phone, laptop, and banner on my phone. Where do you think you will live-- on or off campus? I’m going to dorm room it! If you are part of the transfer Facebook group already, add me! My last name is Lyons, first name Leah!

@sammycatt Was looking through the past pages, and I see you live in Los Angeles as well! Oh my gosh, visit Davis. I guarantee you will love it, and go for the major you want-- psychology! I was so iffy about UC Davis before i had visited, if fact it was one of the schools I said I would never go to. I thought it was going to be gross, I really could not imigane loving it so much. It will also be so much more gratifying studying what you want to study, and will be a great experience moving away! You can always go to UCLA for graduate school, that is hopefully the plan for me

@lyonsbot Hey! I haven’t visited yet, I graduate in 3 weeks and plan on driving there right after to visit. It’s comforting to hear another person from Los Angeles say they liked it. I love Los Angeles but wouldn’t mind trying something new. I will probably live on campus but would preferably live off campus if the opportunity comes. I have lived alone for the past two years so I am super scared about going into a dorm and sharing a room with someone. x:

I don’t have a facebook unfortunately. ): But I do have an instagram! @sammycatt_
I’m slowly coming to the conclusion that I’ll probably be attending UC Davis. It would be really nice to have a friend who is a fellow Psychology major, as you stated. We should definitely meet up if we both go!

@lyonsbot Yeah! I hate to sound ignorant but those were my thoughts as well. >_< Everyone talks about a cow smell, and being so used to the city that automatically makes me think like “oh god it’s gonna be a farm”. You’re right. Psychology is my passion, I can’t imagine studying anything else.

@sammycatt That sounds awesome, I guarantee you will love it! I’ve lived in Los Angeles alone since I have been 18, I just turned 23! I lived alone for 2 years, with a boyfriend for a year, and now I have roommates. It is not that bad, but I could see how the dorm room would be kind of intimidating. I am sharing a room with a girl right now, but it wasn’t what I was planning to happen. I live right across from my CC and live with 3 other students. I had my own room for a year, and one of my roommates suggested to share a room because the rent would be cheaper (we really got along as well) . I am always at my boyfriends place, but I have had no problems sharing a room thus far, surprisingly. We are both so busy.

I am actually going to take abnormal psychology in the summer at UCLA for session A. You should look into taking a UCLA summer class-- it will transfer to UCD! I’m not much of a parter or drinker as well, but I couldn’t imagine getting bored at Davis! More than half the town is college students! I am not sure if you are interested in mental illness, but UCD has a club called Active Minds that I am looking into joining. Once you are engaged in the college atmosphere and life, you will have so much fun!

I will add you

@lyonsbot That is reassuring, I’m sure I will! I can’t wait to visit and officially decide. Happy Birthday! It sounds like we’ve had a fairly similar experience. I’ve had roommates in the past and used to live with an ex, but it feels like it was all so long ago. You make a good point, it always seems intimidating at first but everything takes getting used to. I’d say I’m pretty laid back so I’m not concerned about any issues with a roommate, I’m just very shy! I’m used to being alone most of the time.

I didn’t even realize I could take a class in the summer there, I’m going to look into that! And I’m definitely interested in mental illness. I haven’t checked out any of the clubs yet but really want to join some, as I wasn’t as active in them as I would’ve liked over my CC years. Oh my gosh thank you for all the pointers, you’re getting me all hyped up haha.

@sammycatt Haha thanks! Yeah, I am shy as well. I have been with my boyfriend for 2 1/2 years, and I don’t have a social/ friend life at all, unless I am studying on campus with other students. I am always with him, working, or at school. This is going to be a change for me leaving, since I have spent practically everyday almost with him. I am excited to start making friends when I transfer though! I never really go out at all, I am going to try to come out of my shell and comfort zone when I transfer to Davis. I am 23 and I have been to a bar maybe about once. I am really boring, all I think about is school and the future! It drives me nuts.

You should take a class in the summer! For a UC student, I think it is 1200, but I am not sure about how to get aide for it yet. I am going to accept UCD tomorrow and sign up asap.

Here is the link: http://www.registrar.ucla.edu/schedule/schedulehome.aspx

This is the link for the Abnormal Psych class: http://www.registrar.ucla.edu/schedule/detselect_summer.aspx?termsel=151&subareasel=PSYCH&idxcrs=0127A+++A

50 are already signed up, but it says unlimited for the amount able to enroll? I am going to do it tomorrow, omg.

No problem! I am super excited. Lol. Let me know what you decide and how you like it when you visit!
