@DavisCowsRule I’m applying for Statistics major too. Do you know anything about their Statistics department? is it a growing society? I checked around but not a lot of information.
@DavisCowsRule thanks! You’re super helpful- are you transferring fall 2015 as well? Whats you’re major?
@bizmlover UCD built Math / Stats a new hall just for their departments about ten years ago, so that they can expand. A very respected department, since so many other majors must take courses from them (all the engineers and science majors). Here’s Stats’ site that has more info, and you can read about research (under “grad research”) that you might be able to get involved with: http://www.stat.ucdavis.edu/
@bizmlover maybe we will be classmates next year- where are you transferring from? What do you plan to do with Stats degree? I am planning to be an actuary but I am also considering getting my masters and trying for data analyst/ scientist
@statrans I am hoping to be admitted for Fall 2015 as a Sociology major (want to study law). I went to SFSU for my 1st year (cinema), but had kind of an epiphany about what I wanted to do in my life. I have a 3.5 GPA from SFSU (4.0 the second semester), and 4.0 GPA at my CC (Sac City College, Davis Center). UCD is the only college I applied to this year, so, yeah, I’m as nervous as everyone else about Friday. But, I try to remind myself that I have long range goals, and if I must, I’ll try for UCD’s TAG next September.
@statrans and @bizmlover - Here’s what UCD Stats says about undergrad research: http://www.stat.ucdavis.edu/research/undergrad-research.html
@statrans haha it will be cool if we can become classmate I’m transferring from SoCal. What about you?
I’m not sure what can I do with my degree yet but I’m very excited about it. Maybe I’m thinking of doing quantitative finance or transfer to engineering when doing grad. Also I just talked with a financial specialist, he said nowadays big corporation is all about stats. I guess we just need to supplement it with right courses.
@DavisCowsRule that’s a great news! I would spend time checking that website tonight. Good luck on your app too!
Little off the tangent but we’re studying textbook written by ucd professor for calculus so I’m really exited to take his class.
@DavisCowsRule How is accounting or finance program/job opportunities at Davis? I heard it’s lacking but I want to hear from you. I’m leaning towards UCSB in that regard but I like Davis…
@sliceoflife24 I found this from the internship people: https://icc.ucdavis.edu/lab/major/Accounting.htm
Most accounting people I know are Managerial Economics majors. Getting an internship is probably the best move toward getting into graduate school. And the Graduate School of Management at UCD is one of the most highly rated. If you need a job in accounting before you graduate, there are many firms throughout the Davis-Woodland-Sacramento area. (You could drive easily to Sacto for a job.) A friend of my family has an accounting firm located in Davis - he is a UCD grad.
These are super helpful infos. You’re awesome! Thank you @DavisCowsRule
@sliceoflife24 Saw online that Sacramento’s office for “Accountemps” hires beginning accountant-finance people on a temporary basis for various companies in the area.
@DavisCowsRule Do I have to go through a grad school or have a degree to have those privileges? Or can I pursue accounting while I am studying economics undergrad?
@sliceoflife24 Internships are usually done while an undergrad student during junior and senior years. Your department professors and advisors will also know of possible openings. Beginning jobs are best for people who do not have their degrees yet, and “Accountemps” has openings at that level (temporary positions can work well for students, and lead to full-time jobs after graduation).
@DavisCowsRule Sounds great! Looks like amount of Aid I receive will determine where to go.
How is UC Davis socially?
Any poli sci major? and is poli sci an impacted major @ Davis?
GPA: 3.6
IGETC: one left, taking this sem.
Pre-req: completed ( 3.5? for major gpa)
TAG:NO
EC: Election campaign internships ( twice)
I got accepted by UCSB but still feel nervous for other schools because I have two Cs…though both of them are not major related (ENG2, Art history)
Still waiting for LA, Irvine, Davis. Also applied SD and Berkeley but I don’t think I can get in ( For UCSD, my housing message didn’t change, which mostly likes I got rejected or waitlisted.
@LegioLatius What type of “socially” do you want to know about? You can always find something to do in Davis. and with about half the population being UCD students, there’s a lot going on. However, UCD is not a party school like some others. People tend to be pretty serious about studying and their future careers. But there is also a lot of activities - UCD’s Mondavi Center has concerts, plays, lectures, etc. There’s sports to watch or participate in. There’s clubs and the Greek frats and sororities. There’s big celebrations at the campus, especially in the spring during culture days and Picnic Day. There’s art museums on campus (my oldest brother’s painting hangs in the MU’s Griffin lounge - he’s an artist and a UCD grad). Most people like to hang out downtown, where there’s a variety of places to eat, a few places have dancing, and movie theaters. It’s a big campus, so there’s a lot of people all pursuing things that interest them. Davis always has something going on, like the Farmer’s Market and holiday celebrations. The campus has the ARC if you like to workout, and there’s the paths around Putah Creek where people like to run. The area is famous for its bicycling, with several big races annually. There’s three golf courses, pools for swimming, UCD’s bowling lanes… And, you have the state capitol and all of Sacramento’s social scene just 15 minutes down the freeway. Basically, whatever you like to do, you can (but keep it legal, I live here).
Are there any band people checking this thread?
@DavisCowsRule I am a band kid! I did marching band in high school! I was at a four-year insitution my first semester in college and had a similar epiphany to yours and transferred to my local community college this spring. I also experienced quite a bit of discrimination at the institution I was at because it is a private school. I realized that nutrition has been my passion the whole time, my entire life and I applied this year to Davis as a lower-division nutrition science major. I am really nervous because I am a lower-div. But my high school record wasn’t too terrible. I had a 3.7 or 3.8 overall in high school and took 5 AP classes and did band and choir and sports. I volunteer at my church too and counsel people about nutrition on my free time here and I took a community college class in high school too. My college GPA this past fall was a 3.34, so I am not that strong of an applicant but I figured that it wouldn’t kill me to at least try and hear a no. I really want to be part of the marching band because Davis has such a great program! Are you a band kid as well?
