@boxandwhiskers that is you’re estimated financial aid offer for the 2016-2017 school year, your senior year you’ll get another (probably) comparable amount based on the fafsa you turn in next year. My budget page doesn’t mention work-study but that’s fine, I’m happy with my grant amount and that the $5K in loans are subsidized.
They’ll definitely go over it with us, housing is such a pain to go through lol
Yeah, the same. I wonder how much that leaves for room and board to pay out of pocket?
At all the uc’s I applied to the only used my Family contribution but for some reason ucd is using that and also 3,000 in self help. My grants would cover pretty much all of my cost. But they are saying my grants cant go towards self-help! I am so confused on why this is the only school putting this!
@TransferJ
Same here. Like if I had 3000 right now Im pretty they wouldn’t have offered a lot in grants lol. Maybe they are assuming we would do work-study? It says that the work-study certificate wont be available until June.
@BlackPlasma yes! I put maybe on my FASFA so maybe they are counting it. I’m thinking of changing it!
wow so pretty much my whole tuition is covered with the blue/gold plan+grants, except I’ll still have to take out a 5k loan if I do on-campus housing which I might just out of convenience
@yakattak Thanks for your reply!! Congrats on getting admitted to other schools!
@bolognese
Yea same here. Though with the grants and 5k loan you would still be able to a dorm double with unlimited food plus after two years you would only be 10k in debt with a grace period of 6months after you graduate.
I think they have not added cal grant so those who have the 5,000 left your cal grant will probably cover that
@BlackPlasma true, true. I hope we get to live with other transfer students. I’m looking at reviews for some of the student housing complexes and theyre not that great
@bolognese
Where you get the reviews?
@BlackPlasma Yelp and general googling
I was looking at apartment complexes around Davis and The Arbors seems like the best one, or at least highly rated. I wouldn’t mind renting a room from someone and it would save tons of money but I’m wondering how much of the grants UCD is offering me could go towards personal expenses (not tuition). Plus rooms are filling up fast and SHA would just be way easier to deal with at least for the first year. I dunno
Hmm, reading this thread makes me think that waiting until the end of the semester to look for housing may be a mistake… I looked at Yelp reviews but the apartment complexes I found in Davis seems expensive and the ones in Sac seem slightly sketchy. I don’t really know the area so I think I just need to spend a weekend hanging out in Davis and Sacramento to get a feel for which neighborhoods are safe and inexpensive.
I was also really happy with the amount of financial aid I got. UC Davis may make sense for me financially after all! I didn’t see any scholarships listed on the list of awards, though. Do you guys know if they’ve made those decisions yet? I saw on the info page that the Regents Scholarship email is supposed to go out before May 1st but I have not gotten anything yet.
@boxandwhiskers yeah, I’m kind of leaning towards sucking it up and going with SHA for the first year just to have one less worry off my back. I live in san diego so it would be hard to do the whole meeting with people/seeing apartments
@Wadadli I checked last year’s thread. It seems that you would have seen it on your FA had you gotten.
@bolognese smart move. I had a similar experience before where i couldn’t really physically go to the area to look at apartments and meet people, and no one would take me because I couldn’t meet up with them and because I didn’t have a job yet. But like, I need to LIVE somewhere before I can get a job. lol.
I’m kind of surprised that I didn’t get any scholarships at all. On the UC app I applied for one that was almost describing me as a whole: it was like a scholarship for older students (I’m 32), who have had a gap of 5+ years of education (last time I went to school was in 2003), for women (i’m a female) who have been homeless (I was homeless for 3 years and wrote my PS around my experience as a homeless person).
@boxandwhiskers I’m surprised nobody here has gotten any, or well they (other posters) haven’t just mentioned anything
