UC Davis Fin Aid Posted

My financial aid to Davis is HORRIBLE. Why don’t they notify applicants that they need to submit a LOR to qualify for scholarships? I had no idea… Now I’ll be taking out >$6000 in loans a year… I have an EFC of 0, I’m independent, I have a 4.0, I’m an underrepresented minority AND I’m a 1st gen and all I got was the full Cal Grant and Pell Grant. Irvine gave me Regents for Christ’s sake.

Did all of you receiving scholarships submit a LOR?

@Empathy

Is Davis your first choice?

It’s my 2nd after Cal, but I’m likely rejected from Cal because I missed a core prereq. So, Davis is my de facto 1st choice.

No LOR.

Independent
0 EFC
Discount (approx $11K), loan $$ (I forget), self contribution (I forget, might be around $1500)

Outcome: doesn’t seem much different from you 6-7K/yr loans

Just got my fin aid…it’s a bit disappointing. UC Santa Cruz is offering me about 6 times as much as Davis.

I guess you have to submit a LOR to be considered for scholarships. They say it’s optional but I doubt it, because they don’t even read your application if you don’t submit a LOR.

My self-contribution is $3500. I don’t know where they get that number if my EFC is 0.

You didn’t get a UC Davis Grant at all? Mine was small but I still got one. UCSD was small too. It’s not like it was just Davis not giving much in FA besides the fed and cal grants.

@Dark My UCSC aid is better as well, about the same as Irvine’s… Everything is paid with campus and merit scholarships for a total of $25,000 in free aid, which is plenty to live on despite the est. $30,000 cost.

@Empathy
It’s quite a deal. And if you buy books online it can save hundreds more. I spent less than $100 on textbooks this semester and I have 8 classes…
Housing varies as well. I think the suite-style living (Cuarto) is the cheapest available.

I always buy my books online but I have to buy science/math texts which run a little higher than others. I’m not too worried about books really. It’s monthly, recurring costs that worry me.

I might have to consider suite style living I guess, but I’ve never fared well living with others. They so fracked my projected future.

Okay… So maybe the problem is that they aren’t done with Cal Grants yet… But I thought they’d throw in an estimated Cal Grant. UCI hasn’t included my Cal Grant yet either.

Hello guys,

I cannot accept the Fed. Direct loan Sub. offered by UC Davis. I already submitted the MPN electronically. So, what should I do? Are they gonna process my MPN in June or what?

“Requirements for Federal Direct Loan Sub-NH
Requirement Status
Direct Loan Master Promissory Note Information Not Satisfied”

Just got my UC Davis MyAwards updated.

Eligible for Blue+Gold Opportunity Plan
Estimated cost of attendance: $26,570.00
Total contributions: $15,311.00 (student contribution: $12,372.00 parent contribution: $2,939.00) <— why the hell is my contribution higher than my mom? I don’t even have a job! D:
Financial Need: $11,259.00
Total Estimated Financial Aid $18,624.00

I’m a little lost on how much I’ll be paying. Also, is it common to get your MyAwards page updated before you’re even accepted?

…if your amount is higher, you have a greater chance of getting a subsidized loan which means that the Federal Government will pay for the interest of the loan until after you graduate. If you look at the "Award Distribution by Term section of the Financial Aid Award, youll find the breakdown of the awards. “Federal Direct Loan Sub-NH” is the subsidized loan with interest paid by the Federal Govt. The “Federal Direct PLUS Loan-NH” is the loan for your parents, however, they’ll need to start paying interest the minute the money is disbursed.

sweetlacecharm: Do you have some sort of education savings fund set up in your name? That’s the most likely reason I can think of that your student contribution would be so high.

i haven’t been able to log into MyAwards yet… what log in credentials are you guys using? Did you have to create your usernames and whatnot?
