UC Davis Honors VS UC Berkeley

Can some one explain why better than the other in Biology Major. Is there any advantage being a Berkeley undergraduate than Davis undergraduate at the time of Medical college admissions with lower GPA at Berkeley vs higher GPA at UC Davis

Assuming you get the same GPA at both, berkeley just carries more prestige. I think both have really good research opportunities. But I think Davis might not be as cuttthroat. Letters and Sciences at berkeley is the largest out of all the schools, and therefore lots of people thinking the same thing and competing for same spots at med schools like you.

Thank you Santookie.

There’s a HUGE advantage to going to Berkeley compared to Davis, especially if you are interested in biology. The ‘honors’ at Davis does not mean anything in terms of prestige, no graduate school is going to notice it. Berkeley is going to be top 5 for any biology ranking you see, it’s on the same level as Harvard and MIT. You will probably work in a research lab as a biology major, especially if you want to write an honors thesis - Berkeley’s going to have many more well-known labs doing great research than Davis. You’ll have an easier time with grades at Davis, but you’ll learn so much more from Berkeley’s MCB classes.

Thank you flutterfly_28. Any more advise.

Oh yeah I was told on admitted students tour that they have a program that matches people for internships and about 50% does internships or research atleast once while at the school. Can’t think of the name of the matching program off the top of my heard though. This was at Berkeley. Check out CalDay tomorrow might help your decision ;p

Thank you. Yes we are going to be there tomorrow.

If you are premed, Davis would be a better choice as it is less competitive.

I was under the impressions that med schools take into account if you went to berkeley so of course they don’t expect as high of a gpa.

xfer123, based on what I’ve read, you’re wrong.

What berkeley does do for you, however, is better prepare you for the MCAT than any other school from what I’ve read.

Honestly… the only way you would consider Davis in this situation is if Davis offered you a large sum of money. Seeing that that’s not the case, Berkeley is the obvious choice! Why would you pass up going to the number one public university in America!

Thank you. Already submitted SIR to Berkeley after considering all the factors.
