UC Davis. How hard is Chinese 1 class ? HELP

Hi, I am transferring to UCD this fall from cc.
I am thinking about changing my major into International Relations from Poli-Sci.
Since I need to take Foreign Language for the major, I have decided to take Chinese.
As the title goes, so how hard is this Chinese 1?
Is this for a beginner like me? Or should I have some knowledge to take it?
I have like zero background on this subject…
Please let me know ! Thanks !

PS And what’s the difference between 1A and 1?
It seems like 1,2,3 together? Is it?

All level 1 language classes are intended for people with zero experience in the language. If you have some exposure to whatever the language is, you’re supposed to take a placement test so that you’ll be placed in the class appropriate for your level. With no experience, you just take the first class and continue with the others as wanted/needed.

CHN 1A is a summer session class that combines 1, 2, and 3. Your best bet is to just take 1, 2, and 3 during the regular school year unless it seriously hampers your schedule, if nothing else because that gives you more time overall to really let the different aspects of the language stick. That is, unless you’re very good at learning languages within a short time span (9 weeks according to the catalog). Most people quite frankly aren’t, but that’s on you to decide.

As far as difficulty, I don’t have experience with Chinese specifically to know.

Thanks for the answer. I will go for Chinese 1 !
