Hello,
I was wondering what my chances are regarding admission to UC Davis. My freshmen year GPA was absolutely horrid (2.5). However, it has risen immensely, with a 3.5 sophomore year and a 3.9-4.0 my junior year, with a number of APs (Between Junior and Senior year I'll have roughly 5 or 6 and I'm assuming I'll get 4s and 5s on the exams). Additionally, my senior year schedule is incredibly rigorous. Also, my SAT score is incredibly average, at an 1800. I have good EC's: I've started a religious diversity club, I am captain of my schools debate team and ranked as the top speaker in NJ, I am teaching debate to younger students, I am politically active, and I've written for a politically oriented online magazine. Furthermore, I am a black belt and work as an assistant, teaching martial arts. Additionally, I will have glowing recommendations from truly qualified teachers. Unfortunately, I am an out of state student (NJ) which I know can hinder my chances. I would love some insight regarding my chance of admission.
Thank you very much

Your ecs are pretty solid, and might help. Unfortunately, Davis doesn’t accept letters of rec.

I recommend calculating your UC GPA. Davis (and most other UCs) look at GPA above pretty much all else.

Okay, thanks, that helps a lot.

UC won’t include your freshman grades in your GPA.

University of California Calculating GPA

How do you calculate an out-of-state high school applicant’s GPA? Do you give extra credit for the school’s honors courses?

UC calculates an out-of-state applicant’s GPA similarly to how it calculates the GPA of a California resident, with one exception. We use all courses the student took to meet “a-g” requirements from the summer before 10th grade to the summer after 11th grade. In calculating a nonresident’s GPA, UC will grant honors weight for AP or IB courses only, but not for school-designated honors courses.

You’ll need good grades in all your a-g courses.

Thanks!

UC’s don’t count freshman year, so you do actually have a solid chance. Write a kickass essay and keep your grades up. Good luck! Maybe I’ll see you there in a couple years.

thanks!

If you calculate your UC GPA it would help me give you a more accurate answer, but here’s what I can tell you-

Your ECs are great. That should give you a bit of an upper hand.
Your grades are a bit low - keep them up this year.
Your SAT is slightly low for Davis but not by much. Raising it by even 50 points could make a difference.

Good luck! I’m hoping to get into Davis too.

@peterg123 Thanks for the reply! My UC GPA is roughly a 3.7 (UW). Furthermore, I recently increased my SAT score by 60 points (1860). Hopefully, that makes a difference! I’ll see you at Davis!

That should make a difference for you. You should have a pretty good chance - I would say about 35%. Write a kickass essay!!

Also, UC GPA is your weighted 10-12 if you didn’t know.

@Shrinkrap Thank you. After looking at the profile I would say I have a decent chance of acceptance as long as I can really write a proper essay. I’m around the 40%-50% mark in most of the categories. Hopefully my ECs stand out enough to compensate for the mediocrity.
