Post your stories about getting your first job on campus or around the campus. Post your fears about getting a job if you’re getting your first job while you’re at college. Post the job you just left so I can take it. LOL…

Seriously, though, my family is expecting me to get a job asap in Davis when I move up there. Any advice on how to do that, considering I live pretty darn far? All advice or comments or stories are welcome… there seriously has to be someone else out there in the same boat :)

possibility of being a very good thread, bump.

My daughter got a job being a tour guide her freshman year. Only one of 3 freshmen with that job at the time. She now also works at the front desk there (I call her the Wal Mart greeter of UC Davis) So she has had a great part time job there.
Her BF however, is a rising senior too and FINALLY found a job on campus last spring working somewhere in food services. But the cut his hours to 0 this summer so he is just “hanging out” till school starts back up.
On campus jobs are coveted for sure. Good luck but be persistent!

keep in mind that work-study students are supposed to receive priority for on-campus employment. were u awarded work-study?

also, you’ll probably need to wait until you’re settled in on campus before beginning your job search. so being far away right now isn’t that important. i also think there are limits as to how many hours an incoming freshman can work. this is so that you can get used to college life. how many hours do your parents expect you to work per week?

Perhaps I can be of some assistence … :)

I’m 30 years old so looking for work and working while in school has always been an issue for me. I’m an incoming transfer student as well and looking for a part time job just like you. Although due to the demands of my major, my hours per week will be very, very limited. I am joining an honors program, looking for research opportunities, and taking 3 math classes this quarter so I will be incredibly busy come September. I’m very fortunate, humble, and thankful due to the gracious aid and loan package I received as an independent student.

First, for on campus jobs, have you registered with the student employment center yet? If not here is the link … [UC Davis - Student Employment Center](http://financialaid.ucdavis.edu/Jobs/)

It’s updated almost daily with work study, non-work study, off campus jobs, etc. Almost all of the postings I have seen are looking for current UCD students or graduates.

For off-campus jobs, I’ve been around the area frequently and will be moving from San Jose to Sacramento next month. Depending on how far you live from campus, from what I hear and have been told, look for work outside of Davis as well if you can’t find anything there. Vacaville has the outlet mall with numerous retail stores along I-80 and Sacramento is just 15 mins away, sans traffic.

Of course in this economy, you have to be very proactive in job searching since things are so tough right now for many. I tutored lower division mathematics at my CC before I transferred while being a full-time student. Majoring in Statistics and tutoring math at the same time took its toll and became very exhausting. But here in the Silicon Valley area, it was the most stable part-time job I could get while in school since the market here is so saturated. Also, check out craigslist and do a keyword “Davis” and see what comes up. Snag-a-Job is also good, just type in the UCD zip code for the area and you will see openings.

Hope this helps and good luck with your studies fellow Aggie. :)
