UC Davis living-learning communities

My D will be a freshman in Animal Biology and is thinking of applying for housing this fall in the health science living learning community in Tercero. She’s hoping it will help her make friends faster. Any feedback or advice would be appreciated.

@pekkla congratulations to your daughter! For housing you get several options - single, double, triple, Segundo, Tercero, Cuarto, single sex hall, unisex hall, living learning community, etc. I believe you get three choices where you create a combo of your preferences. For instance, Choice 1 Tercero, double, unisex, living learning community. Choice 2 Tercero triple, unisex, living learning community Choice 3 Segundo, double unisex, no LLC.

What we were told is that if you only list Tercero for all three and Tercero is full then you go to the bottom of the list and get whatever dorm is left over. The same goes for double vs triple. Also, if she finds a roommate on the Davis Freshman FB page (which should be set up soon) then the two of them need the EXACT SAME choices for all options (except dining plan) or they won’t be matched to live together. If she finds one roommate and somehow gets a triple, they will assign a random person in as the third person. She can find two roommates and ask for a triple but, again, their housing choices need to be exactly the same.

There was a question on housing about gender identity and if you cared about living with someone with a different gender identity. I can’t remember the exact wording but many thought it was referring to living in the same hall. Instead it meant living in the same room and there were roommates of the opposite gender assigned as roommates which caused a lot of last minute shuffling.

As far as the benefit for LLC, if it is something she is interested in, she will meet people with common interests which is great. Davis is a very friendly campus and she will meet people in her dorms, in First Year Aggie Connections, in classes, labs, Freshman Seminars, etc.
