SAT1990

Rejected

Objective:
SAT I: 2110 (690CR/700M/720W)
SAT II: None
Weighted GPA (out of 4.5): 3.5
UC GPA: 3.33 (UW) 3.64 (W)
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): ~
AP: US History(4), English Language and Composition (4)
IB: ~
Senior Year Course Load: AP Biology, AP Government, AP Economics, AP English Literature, Precalculus Honors
Extracurriculars: Nothing significant.
Job/Work Experience: Manage a website.
Volunteer/Community service: ~50 hours volunteering for Operation Smile
Essays: I’d like to think that they were fairly well-written and indicative [as well as explanatory] of my GPA. They were disproportionate in size – I focused on my grades during the former essay [~250 words], while really accentuating my job experience with the latter essay [~750 words].

Reflection
Strengths: SAT scores are moderately higher than the average for UC Davis. My essays should have been relatively explanatory/creative – it had blatant semblances of passion, but I presume that they weren’t sufficient enough to ameliorate the awful GPA.
Weaknesses: Probably my GPA. Most of the ‘bad grades’ were from sophomore year – I applied for a Biology major. I didn’t have any subject tests that provided ample evidence that I was capable of handling the subject; and sophomore year, I scored B’s for both semesters of CP Biology. Senior year, I’m pulling fairly easy A’s in AP Biology. However, I can’t exactly show that to the colleges.
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: See above.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Applied to UCI, UCLA, and UCSD. Haven’t heard back from any of them yet. Dreading being rejected from all the colleges that I did apply for. Would be an awful predicament.
General Comments: Don’t be an idiot and make bad grades. Congratulations to everybody that did get in; I didn’t specifically want UC Davis [Really moreso UCSD and UCLA], but things aren’t looking so hot right now.

Other
Race: Chinese

Was born in America but my mom made me stay with my grandparents in China for a few years during elementary school so I was able to learn Chinese. I am pretty fluent in it now.
School type: Math and Technology Magnet
EFC: 0
Single Parent Family

Financial Aid Stuff
Financial Aid/Grants: Over 20k
Loans: Have to take out over 30k in loans…
Have to pay like 3.5k myself? (Work-study?)

Overall
At first when I saw that I was accepted I thought that UC Davis had low standards, then I looked online and saw this thread… I realized how much better everyone else was… All the people who got rejected and waitlisted had better Sat scores and GPAs than me. The only reason I can think that I got accepted was because of my EFC and family. I have bad writing skills so I don’t think my essays or personal statements would have helped much. Anyways, I’m still really shocked about how I got accepted.

Accepted - Cell Biology

Full IB Diploma
GPA (UW): 3.6

Comments: I expected to get into Davis, despite my low test scores, but I’ve already gotten accepted to UCSD, and still waiting on UCLA and UCB, as well as like 7 more unis, so if I really don’t get in anywhere else, I’ll probably go to UCSD instead
