UC Davis or UC Santa Barbara?

I got accepted to both UC Davis and UC Santa Barbara and can't make decision which one to go to regarding academic and campus life, also with major either English or Communication. Deadline is coming. Please help.

Both good options. Have you visited both? What did you like about each? Try deciding on one and see what your gut reaction is; then try the other.

I honestly don’t think there’s any significant difference academically with the majors you are considering – but there is a big difference in the type of communities. So go with “fit”-- if you weren’t going to college, but were considering a place to move, which place would you rather be living?

went to UCSB, best 4 years of my life, and you’ll get a great education if you are disciplined. Had time to study and enjoy life and the beach as well. Went on to Harvard for grad school in psychology. Santa Barbara is a beautiful town, although there was enough to do on campus and I.V. that I rarely went in; regret that a little bit now. Just about my favorite place in the whole country.

I went to UCSB almost 40 years ago. When else are you going to be able to live in beachside community and possibly right on the beach?

Very different, as other posters have said. pleaseadvise, not sure when you went to UCSB. Some students from our immediate area who have gone there have been unhappy with the major party atmosphere/culture there. It seems to have settled down a little bit in very recent years but it should still be a factor.
OP assuming you have visited both you need to think about which place is a better fit for you. Academics are about the same, cost the same. So it’s about where you think you will feel most comfortable.

went there 1971-1975, but have visited a few times since then, as recently as last year. Lots of construction and expansion on the outer fringes of campus, but the general campus and Isla Vista had much the same feel as it did 30+ years ago. It was a serious party school back then as well, almost every night you could find one if you wanted. You could also find students in the library early Saturday or Sunday morning working hard for hours on end. I managed to do enough of both. The sun, smell of the fresh ocean air and being steps from the beach, walking on the beach in the evening, or sitting outside the UCEN and eating lunch overlooking the lagoon was something hard to match anywhere else. For me it still feels like home when I visit. As for the partying ,you can do as much or as little as you like. back then there was no pressure either way. Common sense and moderation in all things, you’ll be fine.

^I’d love it if you old UCSB grads could post your stories on the UCSB forum! I’m especially interested to hear of the food places that were around in Isla Vista. I can’t believe you guys were there before Camino Real Marketplace opened. Was K-Mart there yet? Was Baba Falafel’s still there in place of Freebirds? Ahh, so many questions.

I was an '07 grad, but I hear from alumni that the partying culture is not as intense as it used to be, especially after Halloween 1992. Still no pressure for partying as you mentioned. Great campus and strong academics. The Isla Vista culture is a unique experience for undergrads and I still miss it…

Davis is more of a traditional college town and SB is more a beach town . Which environment suits you best? The education will be the same: great at either school.
