UC Davis or UC Santa Cruz for International Relations major?

I’m really debating between the two because I’m positive that UC Davis offers a better program and more opportunities for International Relations, but when I visited the campus it felt isolated, had a conservative vibe (NOT implying that everyone there is conservative.) I could see myself feeling trapped there, I felt like I had entered The Truman Show.

Overall Santa Cruz definitely fits my personality and I would be so happy living close to the beach but they don’t even offer an IR major, the closest thing is “Global Economics”. It also felt a little TOO loose, and a lot of things made sense when I later found out that the group of people I had been hanging out with were all on acid. It seemed like there was a huge party scene, and I’m not into partying at all. This could have just been a reflection of the people my friends hang around with, but aside from that I liked the environment at Santa Cruz more.

I realize that I’m there to learn, and that I’ll most likely be too busy consumed in my school work to even worry about feeling bored. In the end I am most concerned with what would be the most beneficial for me after graduating in terms of getting into graduate school, finding a job in my desired field, etc. This makes me lean towards Davis, but when I think of the vibes and personal happiness I lean towards Santa Cruz. Then again, happiness is what you make of it right?

Very confused - inputs would be greatly appreciated  Thanks

I was initially extremely drawn to UCSC, but the drug use turned me off. I hear you can be friends with people who don’t do any drugs, but it seems more present there than other schools. The campus is beautiful, though.

I think that, because SC doesn’t have an IR major and you seem to care primarily about that, you should pick Davis. As with any school, there are bound to be pockets and places you really enjoy. (And the campus isn’t isolated if you make yourself go on trips!)
