Hey everybody!
It looks like I will probably be attending UC Davis this fall and I’m super excited!! I’m a Political Science major and I was wondering how is the Poli Sci department at Davis? How are the classes in terms of difficulty/ rigor? are there some opportunities for internships and study abroad programs at Davis? Is it possible for me to double major in econ?
sorry for asking so many questions LOL
I cannot give you specifics in regards to the Political Science program at UCD but for internships, you have the State Capital 20 minutes away which should be very advantageous.
For study abroad, here is a link with plenty of options: http://studyabroad.ucdavis.edu
Information in declaring a double major: https://registrar.ucdavis.edu/records/changes-major-minor
@Gumbymom thank you so much for your reply! I’ll check out the links
Are you transferring or are you a freshman? :o I transferred this past Fall as a Poli Sci major and I think Davis is a great choice. It’s close to the Capitol so there’s many internship opportunities. Your major advisor will send you emails (weekly or even daily) regarding internship openings and other opportunities you may be interested in. There’s also UC Sacramento & UCDC (Washington DC) where you go to the respective locations to intern/take classes. In terms of difficulty/rigor, it’s just like any college class. Not going to lie, as a transfer student, going from lower division to upper was a little hard. Or just UC education was different in general for me. I had really bad study skills during my time at CC. I wouldn’t read the books assigned and somehow passed with As and Bs. Did that my first quarter of school and failed a class. That’s just me being dumb (I’m pretty sure you’re better than me). LOL. I got it together this past quarter and did A LOT BETTER Winter quarter compared to Fall quarter. But most professors will do a midterm, final, & 2 papers. I have friends who are science majors and they’ll have 3-5 midterms but from my time at Davis so far as a Poli Sci major, it’s either 1-2 papers (3-5pages in length), 1 midterm, & 1 final. My most recent class, 70% of our grade was exams and 30% was our papers. I also had another class where it was 60% final & 40% midterm (no hw, no papers, just exams). So it also depends on your professor and how they want to set the class up.
@dianeuh96 thank you so much for your insight!! I’m an incoming freshman I have bad study skills too but I’ll try my best to get over them and work hard. I’m happy to hear that Davis is a good choice for Poli Sci & the fact that it’s so close to Sac makes it so appealing!
@CaffeinatedCat No problem! They also have study abroad programs for Poli Sci majors too. It’s mostly in Europe. I know this summer, students get to take 2 Poli classes while in Switzerland (Geneva?). For the fall, it’s in London School of Economics if I remember correctly. There’s study abroad programs for many different majors/interests. And you can double in Econ. I don’t know when you can declare it since you’re a freshman and I’m a transfer so it may be a bit different. For transfers, they told us we could declare a second major (or change majors) after our first quarter as long as we’re in good academic standing. I’m Poli Sci rn but I plan on switching to history with a minor in Poli Sci instead. You’ll enjoy your time here! Have fun
