UC Davis offered me a University Grant in my financial aid package. Does anyone know what that means? Is this the type of grant that is disbursed to students to help pay for tuition and living expenses?
They also offered me a subsidized loan. I’m wondering if I have to take the loan before I can receive the University Grant?
Any clarification on this would be greatly appreciated!
Usually the university grant will be applied to your fixed costs. If you are then short, you pay the school the remainder. If the grant exceeds fixed charges, then the excess is disbursed to you to use for you additional cost of attendance. You are not required to take a loan. It is available to help you meet the remaining portion of your costs if you need all or part of it.
@weliseflo, there are three sources of public grants: the federal government, which provides the funding for Pell and SEOG grants, the California Student Aid Commission, which provides Cal Grants, and the CSU or UC itself, which can choose to provide a university grant. As BrownParent indicated, there is no restriction on what the grants can be used for, although they’d ordinarily be used to pay tuition first, and then other expenses (and whatever’s left over is disbursed to you).
Thank you, this was very helpful!
