which one is better…
just as in general…
(environment, curriculum, campus, climate…etc.)
but i mean overall…

environment: davis (much better college atmosphere)
i've been to irvine many times and it is zzzz

curriculum: davis (ranked higher by usnews and is more selective than UCI)

campus: irvine (nice buildings, city is freaking clean)

climate: irvine (southern cali > nothern cali)

overall: davis

I would go for DAVIS!! no doubt

for curicullum, i would say they are about the same. Davis only 1 rank higher than UCI. and for the selectivity, for fall 2004, the admit rate for davis was 55% while UCI was 50%.

UCD would be my choice.

the 55 to 50 is deceptive....

by selectivity i am referring to gpa, average sat, average sat II. the average davis student performed better in high school that the average irvine student.

i know this isn't part of the choice, but i'd go to ucsb instead over those 2! in fact, i am, lol.

Davis is the infinitely more popular choice at my high school. A lot of great guys I know are going there. Plus my brother goes there, and he is MIT-caliber, so it's not a bad school at all.

UC-Davis had money to spend and spent it on a new football stadium.
UC-Irvine had an equal amount of money and decided to splurge on a new library.
Enough said.

We're getting a new library?

Geeze personally I'd rather have the new library, not that the library at Davis is bad or anything.

i prefer new library lol... i'd be fine watching football at an old stadium
i'm going to Irvine cuz i'm a city person n itz not too far. (Irvine too close Davis too far blah)

You don't have any football at Irvine, so well you won't be able to watch in an old stadium..in fact Irvine doesn't even compare in terms of College Experience. Irvine is a commuter school, Davis eptimizes what college is all about. Your're in college....your're on campus almost all day....city life or not....your going to want a vibrant and alive campus. Davis has a campus and atmosphere that is really geared told student life. Davis spends the most money out of all the UCs in student activities. Everything is practically free, from basketball games to free swing dancing classes...you name it we got it. I mean what campus sells out thier school semi-formal with over 1,000 students showing up? What school has traffic that consists solely of bikes on campus? Which UC has the biggest chance for growth and advancement in the coming years? What UC is in the exciting and dramatic transition to becoming a big time sports school? What school gives away enough free t-shirts that I have a whole wardrobe a free stuff in my closet? UC-DAAAVIS

P.S- Come on guys every single school has a library. What do you remember when your long graduated from college....that time you studied for your Chem midterm in the "new" reading room or the thrilling come from behind victory as the Aggies score a touchdown at the last second causing the studetents to storm the field in complete euphoria?!!! 80% of what you remember from college is the experience...enjoy it..dont waste the best years of your life just studying at the library....UC Davis has that perfect balence between acedemics and soical life...

Davis is actually building a lot of new things, they just finish building a new Genome research lab, a new Biological Science building, a new lecture hall, a new parking structure, a Food Science Institute, a Mathematical Science building, and a few more things. These things range from being done, to just being started.

Mkay. First of all, I go to UC Irvine so of course I'm gunna be a little biased just like GoAgs.

No there is no football at UCI. This is true. Honestly, I like football and I do wish we had a team, but it isn't THAT big a deal especially when comparing it to Davis or something. UC Davis football is D1-AA, you're not exactly going to see highlights on sportscenter or anything. Yes they have a non league, non division game against Stanford next year, but that's not gunna suddenly propel them to the top. Anyways, I'm not here to bash UC Davis as I think it is an excellent school, just trying to shed some light.

UCI basketball is sometimes pretty good, a few years ago I think they were even ranked. This year UCI beat Davis twice. Basketball games are really fun and they also give out tons of free stuff (shirts, etc.) here too, and it's a lot of fun to be in the CIA (completely insane anteaters) section and get a little rowdy. Both Davis and Irvine have a lot of room for growth as they both have a lot of undeveloped land. They're both going to be expanding a lot.

Davis has a college town atmosphere. Irvine does not. That being said, there are 20,000 undergrads at UCI, 80 percent live in dorms their first year. There are a bunch of people who go home on the weekend but not everyone does and you'll meet people to chill with and have fun. And there is a lot to do in SoCal. Corona del Mar and Laguna Beach are minutes away, and there are tons of concerts/sporting events in nearby LA and in the OC.

I never heard anything about a new library or anything and I've never heard of anyone bragging about it, so maybe I'm just out of that loop.

Anyways, I am enjoying my time here at UCI and am really glad I'm here. I have become involved and it really is a great school. Davis is also an excellent school and a great choice for a lot of people. I think both schools have their advantages and disadvantages and you shouldn't really listen to a bunch of anonymous people on a message board, go out there and check out the campuses!

yackityack is right you personally need to check out the campuses because Davis will apeal to different people than Irvine will. I know I've really liked the college town atmosphere of Davis but some people like the city more so go do some campus visits and see which one feels like a better fit for you personally.

Based on the campus and location alone, which one do you prefer?

Thank you for that, yackityack! I'm probably going to Irvine next year and I was worried about it not having much student life/etc compared to campuses like Davis, but I'm glad to hear positive comments from someone who goes there.

my parents donated $1,000 to the construction of the UCI library and i got in ...... lol

financial means work

I completely agree with yackityyack, check out the campuses yourself if you can't decide. But here is my admittedly biased comparison of UC Davis and UCI, I've been to both schools even visited friends their this year..chose Davis over Irvine, and have many friends at Irvine that also like it. Remember this is my opinion here, check out each campus yourself because both ARE GREAT SCHOOLS.

CAMPUS:
-UC Irvine has a very nice campus, it is very new, with very nice buildings. It is much more compact than UCD...so it is technically easier to get to class once on campus. Downside, parking is a b*tch since all most of the students commute or drive to school that aren't freshman. Traffic can also be very bad.
- UC Davis is the 2nd oldest UC...even older than UCLA...the campus is huge and sprawling...with buildings from all different decades. Creates nice mesh of acticuture...the campus is very GREEN in spring and summer...lots of trees creating loads of shade. BIKES! Even though campus is huge, with a bike (the trademark of Davis) I can make it to any class in less than 5 minutes. Also of note Unitrans is a student ran Bus service, it takes pedestrians everywhere through the campus and ALSO picks up students who live in apartments of campus. THIS SERVICE IS FREEE! Traffic is barely anything as so many students either bike or take Unitrans, even if your upper classmen.
DORM LIFE:
- UC Davis has been making new dorms like crazy...Tercero will be opening their new dorms next year. Downside of living in Tercero, that is the only location on campus where people can actually smell the cow dung. Segundo, has got new dorms and old dorms, PLUS new DC...this is huge...DC food is very tolerable at Davis. Cuarto is located a block or two of campus and is for people looking for a quieter dorm scene, but it has pools and Jacuzzis.
- UC Irvine- With so many students going home dorms die on the weekends. Other than that some dorms have an extreme sense of community such as Sierra. DC is very not friendly to guests...if you have friends visiting Irvine you cannot swipe them in..when your a frosh you'll realize how much this policy sucks.
CAMPUS LIFE:
- Irvine, though may be a great school, and people can still find friends since it is college...IS A Commuter schoool! The socal kids go home alot, if your from norcal you may find yourself bored on the weekends. Like any school there is a large number of clubs and IMs. THe sense of community does not really exist to the level of Davis.
- Campus life is what Davis prides itself on. From our Chancellor to our friggin ID cards, COMMUNITY is emphasized at Davis. I don't know what it is, we're the smart kids, that didn't want to go to the party school (UCSB), don't stress about every test and grade (UCB or UCLA), and enjoy the laid back life that is living in a town like Davis. You'll find most students at Davis to be extremely approachable and friendly. The guys open the doors for the girls, Frisbees are flying on our immense open spaces, it is very refreshing
COLLEGE LIFE:
- Irvine, the greek system at irvine isnt very noteworthy. THe party scene is pretty bad if you don't know people (if your a frosh basically). IMs are there, but not nearly to the level of Davis. Though Irvine is D1...the CIA (completely insane anteaters) is a rip off of the Davis Aggie Pack and is not nearly as successful. They also don't have a football team, which means that Irvine wll never really be a big time sports school. Zot Zot...or whateva
- Ahh Davis, home to the largest student spirit organization in the nation...The Aggie Pack. With our teams going D1 and the fact we have FOOTBALL, even if your not into sports AGGIE PRIDE will take over. ALL GAMES ARE FREE and that feeling of cheering as your UC DAVIS football team pounds it in the endzone is what college is all about. We're building a new stadium, seriously past Davis alumni would KILL to be in your position. A freshman who will see the new stadium and our D1 caliber teams...so LUCKY. Our greek scene is pretty large (MTV filmed Sorority Life here), so the parties aren't too hard to find. But it isn't to the level, where the only thing to do is party. And everyone pretty much stays on the weekends, you don't wanna miss out on all the cool campus events. With all our open space and the new ARC, our Intramurals are seriously out of this world. Everyone does IMs, they are also FREE, and have levels so that everyone can play.
Location:
-Irvine is located in the middle of the OC. Very close to beaches and the whole SoCal area. You even could get a job at DISNEYLAND since it is so close. So it has all the amenities that Yackityyack listed earlier. The town of Irvine is slightly bigger than Davis, so it would have a real mall for those of you that like to shop and what not.
-Davis is itself an isolated college town, but it has the amazing community i talked about earlier. Outside of the town limits there is nothing but farms. But, if you crave the city life Sacramento is only 15 minutes away. San Francisco is also only a short hour away. I personally have been to every good rock concert (Jimmy Eat World, Something Corporate,Straylight Run)in San Francisco. I can argue that you can get to SF faster than most Irvine kids can get to LA with the infamous socal traffic. Amtrak is located in Davis and it makes it pretty easy for carless frosh to get to a BART Station and have complete access to the Bay Area for weekend trips. While Irvine has the beach, Davis has the snow. Ski resorts are just a short drive away (the biggest club on Campus is the ski or snowboard club), hella (haha, we're in NorCal at Davis) people go to the snow on weekends

My "personal" conclusion:
I could not see myself at Irvine and having nearly as good as a time as i'm having in Davis. The commuter school does not sound like my cup of tea, I'm going to college for the experience, and though you can experience it at Irvine, Davis provides the PERFECT and BEST college experience in the UC System. I've debated my brother on this issue with Cal, it's a pretty even argument there...but between IRVINE and DAVIS...DAVIS WINS hands down in college experience. You talk to Davis students you'll find that a vast majority not only like Davis, but LOVE IT.
