Davis!!!!:)

Well I've pretty much said all I need to say about UCI. I don't need to hash and rehash, but if you have any questions feel free to ask. I have never gone to Davis so I do not really know what it's like, nor has goAgs attended UCI. I have friends at Davis too and I from what I know, they really like it, but most of my friends at Irvine like it too. So whatev. I am a NorCal-er myself and chose to go to Irvine for several reasons, one of which was that I wanted out of the central valley and didn't want to live in a rural setting. That is just my opinion though. Maybe Davis gives more of a "traditional college experience", but I do know that I am enjoying my time here at Irvine and don't want to be anywhere else. I have friends at most the UCs and they all seem to like their school so I don't know you can absolutely say that one has the greatest experience. That's far too subjective of an answer. College is what you make of it no matter where you go. Good luck with all those decisions and don't take our word for it, ask a lot of people what they think and go and see what the schools look like and if you like the feel.

some people say Irvine is like a commuter..what is a commuter?

hhhsandy: commuter school can mean people go home everyday, or the people usually leave on the weekends/go home, thereby reducing possibility for more social acitivities/bonding on the weekends

awakenedream..oh i c thanks ^__^
so Davis is really like a college then?

UCI only guarantees housing to freshman, after that it is a lottery. Most people live in nearby apartments or, even better, rent a house on Newport Beach. So, every one goes home...not necessarily home to mommy & daddy & their hometown, but home to where they are living off campus.

Since every one is driving around- it is SoCal, ya gotta have a car after first year- you have to make a different kind of effort to connect, rather than simply run into people on campus. Join a greek group, a club sport, a social club or hang with all your buds living on the beach, entire neighborhoods on the beach are college students-not just UCI- so, there are lots of possible new friends and things to do with them.

Depends what you're looking for, but I chose UC Davis hands down due to the excellent college atmosphere and the true balance of academics and social life.

ok..and how are the freshmen dorms in UCD?

Man i'm about ready to send in my SIR to davis. I absolutely love the campus, people, and sense of community at davis. Buttt..... I still have yet to look at University of Washington and I'm also taking into consideration that irvine has a much better poly sci program

ahhh choices choices.

I like UCI and am a polisci major, but I honestly don't think that for an undergrad it'll make much different for polisci at the UCs since they are all really good, especially the difference between Irvine and Davis. If you like Davis's campus and stuff a lot better, I'd go there. For me Irvine was a better choice overall, but others like Davis better. Just my $.02.

yackityack, i'm curious to know more about the UCI social scene. being a norcal kid i wont be going home very often, so how are weekends and the parties at uci?

Yeah I pretty much never go home. I personally am not a real partier. There are a lot of people who go home on the weekend but there is definitely a contigent of NorCal people, and socal people too who don't go home on the weekend. There are definitely fewer people here on the weekend than the week. I always have people to hang out with on the weekends though, some are NorCal-ers, some are SoCal-ers. You just gotta meet people. The parties are not on campus (well some people try to party in the dorms and get written up, but anyway...) but you could go to Newport which is RIGHT next to UCI and there are always Greek parties going on. The parties aren't going to jump out at you like at UCSB, but they are definitely there.

Alicantekid is an Alum and I know he had a good time, and I'm sure he could shed some more light on the situation. Irvine isn't a college town at all, but you can still have fun, and you're right in the middle of SoCal.

I'm a SoCal kid so I know alot of people who go to UCI. I say they're pretty satisfied with the experience. And having been there myself, the campus is really nice. I have to say, Irvine is not in the middle of nowhere, and so there's alot of things to do especially if you have a car. Going to davis would mean losing disneyland, knotts berry farm, LA and what not. But being in SoCal for so long, I think you would want a pace of change. (Vice Versa) Most of those who go to UCI in the SoCal area because their parents prefer the proximity to their homes. Therefore landing the name of a commuter school. I have to say most all of the UCI dorms are really nice since the school rent out apartment places and make it available as dorms. So far, UC Davis' Segundo Dorms seem to be the only best ones.

As for Davis, I haven't had the chance to closely inspect it because I visited it about 4 years ago. 4 years can give you a memory lapse. Hopefully, no one from UCD or the pictures are decieving because I think the campus does surpass that of UCI. And from researching UCD students seem to be more the intelletual type, where students want to get to know each other on the base of personality compared to other schools. This is information I got was from

Go to Google, and type College P rowler (together), and search for Davis. Very helpful, but it sounds rather unbiased to me. Since there are both positive and negative comments.

Anyway, all and all. At my school, those who are the top 5%-7% don't like UCI because we hear it all the time, and I guess that affects our perspective about its respectability. I'm sure the programs there are just as good. Besides your success is solely on yourself. If you spend your time researching enough about UCDavis, alot of the students really pride in their school, and I think you'll learn to love it. As for UCI, there aren't enough students to convince me, including my friends who DO go to UCI.

it's all about what you will put into UCI or UCD if you go to either, but on the other hand i'm also with KD...

i didn't consider UCI because of the caliber students from my school that got into and are going to UCI. what's the point of working so hard in high school just to go to a college with the guy that got a 1 on his ap english exam. (yes true, btw)

UCI and UCD have just about the exact same caliber of students. The acceptance rates are very similar with Irvine having a little bit lower of an acceptance rate actually. For every person who got into UCI with a 1 on that AP Lang, there is someone at Davis with that too. BTW, I go to UCI and I got a 5 on it :)

Yes, UCI has some areas to work on, but they are RAPIDLY improving all aspects of the university. This is evident by the efforts of the UCI administration, that they are working hard to propell UCI into a well-rounded, top-tier institution. Here are a few examples:

When completed in 2007, the Student Center will be one of the largest in the US - and because of student demand, the anthill pub will be twice its former size.

Their new housing compexes www.vistadelcampo.com are so popular that students wait in line overnight to sign up.

Just a little bit of info.

I liked davis a lot when i applied. It has a nice campus and great science opportunites. It seemed to have way more prestige associated with it as well, compared to irvine. I went to a bay area high school though, so it might be different in socal. In the end, i didn't want to pay UC tuition, but I would have chosen davis.

I've never gotten that impression. I'm from Norcal too. People talk more about Davis but that's cause it's way closer to my hometown. Prestige-wise they're the same. Even if it weren't so, go to the one you like better.

I'm a socal'er going to Davis and I'm having a blast. Just wanted to say that in case any socal'ers are having doubts about coming up north, you'll have no problems..

which school has a student body that is more "competetive" and where all the kids are pushing and shoving for A's. Im the type of guy that's more laid back so which school would be better for me?
