UC Davis VS UC Irvine

Irvine is a cinch from what I've heard from people

Both schools are about the same academically. Just go to the one you feel most comfortable with when visitng and considering everything else. I do not think Irvine is a "cinch" but I seriously doubt that Davis is either.

, I heard that the people at UCI are more clique-ish. is this true?

"I liked davis a lot when i applied. It has a nice campus and great science opportunites. It seemed to have way more prestige associated with it as well, compared to irvine."

you have got to be kidding me. uc davis prestigious. come on. everyone you talk to says, oh davis is out in cow town. there is no way davis is prestigious, and there also is no way it is more prestigious or more desirable than irvine. come on. irvine is even slightly more difficult to gain admission too, its gpa and sat is higher, and its acceptance rate lower, and has significantly more high ranked programs.

ucchris- Apart from this site, no one has ever told me they think irvine is prestigious. Many have told me they think a lot of davis.

Well.....Everyone I know considers UCI to be way more prestigious than UCD.....My teacher always talks about college and always mentions UCB, UCLA, UCSD, and UCI....The only thing I ever hear about Davis is how is smells like cows. Hepha!

i think they're pretty much even..i mean outside of california most people only know about la or berkeley and maybe san diego. Davis definitely gets the advantage in the atmosphere department. Besides, Irvine's numbers are inflated because they dont accept as many since its a smaller campus

Irvine's numbers are not inflated. Yes it is a smaller campus, but they get significantly more applications than UCD. http://www.ucop.edu/news/factsheets/2006/fall+2006+app_table+3.pdf

UCI recieved 38,371 and UCD recieved 32,611 freshman applications for fall 2006. That's not a sign of inflated numbers, that's a sign of a campus whose popularity keeps increasing - hence the % rise in applications. There was a time, prior to the 1990s when both of the campuses recieved the same amount of applications, but that has changed for good now.

For the most part Irvine is a regional commuter school. It makes sense that their application pool would be large due to the densely populated area surrounding the campus. Quantity of applications is not as important as quality. The schools have been consistently equal in the quality of students who actually attend.

Sorry collegemom16 -but not really correct. The biggest increase in applications for UCI have been coming from outside of the immediate OC area, particularly Northern California.

Also, the Sacramento region has seen explosive population growth, yet that growth has not matierilized in the same % increase for UCD in applications as UCI.

I also wasnt talking about quality of students, only commenting on a previous poster's claim that UCI's numbers are inflated.

^^Got a link for those statistics?

There is a significant NorCal contingent on the UCI campus (me for example), especially from all of those competitive bay area schools.

My computer is acting up (sorry), so having trouble adding a link. However, here is a qoute from UCI admissions back in 1998

"The largest increase this year is in students from the Bay Area; they represent 15 percent of this year's California total, up from 12 percent last year."

That is a 25% increase in 1 year back in 1998! At that rate, I expect that the % of students applying to UCI from the Bay Area, is probably closer to 25% or higher. So while most of the interest in UCI still comes from the larger socal metropolitan area (Santa Barbara down to San Diego), a significant increase is coming from Norcal, Central Valley, etc..

If you're able to post that message you should not have a problem posting a link. I'm still waiting on that..

1998? Please back up your statement with current stats.

Commuter school means that the students attending there live around the campus. UCI is a commuter school. There are not significant numbers (statistically) from anywhere but the surrounding area.

Just remember to keep in mind that your college experience is what you make of it. Although there are certain advantages one campus has over another, realize how much of them are really important to you.

I for one will be transferring to UCI this fall, and I am very happy with my own decision. The campus is beautiful and clean, and having visited a couple of times I am very impressed with the atmosphere. Irvine is better and convenient for me in many ways that Davis isn't.

In my observations, I've seen plenty of people refute the prestige between UCI and UCD. But the term 'prestige' is an ambiguous term in this case and is defined from person to person. In most of my observations, I see and hear from SoCal people that Irvine is better. Whereas NorCal people would disagree and say that Davis is better. Some people even believe that they are 'equal' enough that distance is the deciding factor, and would choose UCI or UCD depending on if they want to be close to home or far from it. But don't get me wrong, I acknowledge there are exceptions too.

In all honesty I feel that Irvine and Davis are on such a similar level that comparing their academics is well, rather lame. They are not UCLA, and they are definitely not Cal. I don't see a reason to argue which UC should take 4th place.

Here are some UCI statistics for those who are wondering...

According to these, there are only slight differences between the two campuses.

First of all, does Irvine have more of a "commuter" atmosphere than Davis? Yes. Do most people at UCI commute to school? No.

I'm not sure what everyone means by commuter. There are some people who live in OC and live at home and commute to school every day. This is certainly not the majority at UCI. Although, many people are from socal, most either live on campus or in any of the apartments close by to UCI. So I think that the term "commuter" is somewhat misleading. It is true that there are fewer people at UCI on the weekends because they go home, but most people at UCI do not come to class and then go home everyday or something like that. That being said, from my experiences at Irvine, I have never been bored on the weekends and there are ALWAYS people around to do stuff with. It's college, make friends, it's really not that hard.

Now, I have never been a student at Davis but I know people/have relatives who have gone there. It is much more of a "college town" in that when it's school season the population of the town drastically changes and many businesses in Davis are catered to students. Irvine is not the same in this way. However, there really is a lot to do in socal and even around the UCI campus. There are ample places to eat/hang out/whatever that are walking distance. The beach is a ten minute drive from campus. There is plenty of shopping, professional sports events, etc. all accesible from UCI.

Academics? C'mon people they're about the same, its just stupid arguing between the two. If you are deciding between the two then go to the schools, check out the atmospheres, location, people, whatever. I, for one, know that I am very happy at UCI--socially, academically, etc., and would choose it again for sure. BTW, I'm white and from the central valley/norcal--about 6 hours north of Irvine.

Now I cannot not say a whole lot about Davis because I do not go there, but I have visited it several times, and personally, I wasn't feeling it at all, but that's just my opinion. But some people really like it (i.e. collegemom) so that's awesome and I'm sure good experiences are to be had there.

for those of you who currently attend UCD or UCI, can you please post up your GPA? i think my deciding factor will be which school is less competitive in terms of academics. i'm from norcal by the way.
