integtypeR, I don't think you will see much difference between the two in terms of competitiveness. You need to look at the campus of each school. Do you love sports? Are you really interested in having lots of internship opportunities? Do you want to play intramurals? Would you like to be closer to home? Then go to Davis. Do you love the beach? Are you more interested in off campus activities? Will you have access to a car? Then go to Irvine.

Internship opportunities and intramurals are the same at both campuses.

^^yeah but collegemom has a thing for Davis.

And the only thing that Davis has over UCI in sports is football (D1AA football), which Irvine doesn't have. Traditionally, Basketball is better at UCI, although this year we split the series. UCI men's volleyball is #1 in the country, currently has a 21 game winning streak (I actually just got back from a game where they easily beat UCSB 3-0). Baseball at UCI is decent this year, although in the past few years they've been ranked a few times. I don't claim that UCI has the greatest sports program ever, I'm just saying I don't think you could really say if you like sports go to UC Davis and not UC Irvine. There's a bigger difference between UCI and UCLA or Cal.

Lots of people do IMs at UCI. The leagues fill up fast. I, personally, played IM football with my hall this year and I was planning on playing IM softball this spring but the league filled up too fast.

Competitiveness is probably going to be similar, plus you'd get such a small sample of GPAs from people on CC that it wouldn't mean anything if anyone posted their GPAs, and you don't know how much work they really did to get it.

Probably the same thing could be said of your zeal for UCI. Here are some links of interest.
UCD has reputedly one of the largest internship programs with a reported 70% of students participating in interships with 6000 placements per year. It is the only UC with 5 professional schools ( med, law, business, educ, vet med). (thanks anothercollegemom for this information)

Here is a link to the UCD internship and career center:
http://icc3.ucdavis.edu/ps-int.htm

The IM sports program at Davis is one of the finest in the country. Over one-third of the student body participated in at least one sport last year and most play more than just one, as evidenced by the 21,000 roster spots filled over the course of last year. Over the past three years, participation in IM sports has grown by 45 percent.

and in baseball

Also the Aggie pack at UCD is the largest school spirit organization in the country. Go Aggies! :)

School spirit organizations are deceptive when you don't have to pay to join and all you have to do to be a member is sign in and get your free shirt once. At UCI we have the CIA (completely insane anteaters) which is the largest "student group" on campus, but this is kind of a deceptive claim. Clearly there are many schools in the country with more fan support for athletics than UCI and UCD even if they don't technically have the largest student spirit organization.

I don't have numbers for internship rates or for IM rates. But I would guess that the numbers for UCD are probably somewhat higher than UCI's for internships and IMs (the facilities are great too) although many people do IMs at UCI and Irvine and OC have great internship possibilities as well, particularly with high-tech firms and the like. But I don't have numbers.

Clearly they are both great schools and offer great opportunities and experiences. I'm not trying to battle UC Davis, just giving my perspective.

Oh, for baseball, we've beat CSUF twice this year :) but lost to them four times..so that's a somewhat deceptive claim, haha.

Why you should consider an internship:
http://content.monstertrak.monster.com/resources/archive/internships/matter/

Yeah, internships are good. College isn't just about grades and academics, you need real experience to compliment it.

yackityack, you mention the beach is 10 mins from UCI if you have a car. Very appealing for a Norcal student! For car-less freshmen, do you know if there is any bus service from UCI to Newport Beach?

riparian, public bus transportation is FREE (yes, FREE), if you are a UCI student.

I'm sure you could take the bus to the beach but no one that I know of does that. Most likely you will meet friends who have cars and you'll go with them to the beach. That's what I do. The beach (usually Corona Del Mar in Newport Beach) is pretty popular with the students. In fact, a lot of student clubs have barbecues/bonfires there.

Sounds good either way....thank you. I see there are surfing lessons available @ Newport Beach through campus recreation, too.

2 of my friends who are currently UCI students (one male and one female) say they have not had the college experience they thought they were going to find at UCI since it is a commuter school and the campus is not very lively while there. You don't see students throwing around a frisbee a lot and the couple of times I have gone everyone seems very involved with what they are doing, giving me the impression that it is not a very sociable school. Davis may not be in such a nice location as UCI, but it is defenitely more college-y, if that makes sense.

Here is my back-up, regarding demographic change in new undergraduates for UCI. As you can see (particularly collegemom and megathunder) since 1997, attendance from OC and LA has decreased while other parts of CA has increased.

i have been stressing whether to go to uc davis or uc irvine recently too...
i live in socal and all my friends are goin there bekus its like 30 minutes away from where i live but uc davis also seem like a nice place but much theres not much to do at davis and i dont know anyone there...

ahhhh!! may 1st is closing to an end
must decide!

Go visit them both! It might become more obvious to you which one is a better fit. Maybe not, but it's worth the shot since you'll be spending 4 years there.

i already visited both of the campus, they all seem really nice thats why its so hard for me to decide

i was leaning toward Davis last year...but this year Davis dropped below irvine and even barbara in US news...weird

btw...the new dorms at irvine NORTE seems really nice but the new dorms in TERCERO are also nice but not as nice as NORTE

^^
you mean the Vista Del Campo Norte? Norte is mostly for upperclassmen; most freshmen live in either mesa court or middle earth. VDC norte is privately owned, and yeah it's pretty nice considering the VDC complex is named the best student housing in the nation.

and davis ranking drop is due to an error; it's about the same ranking as uci

no doubt uc davis
i've been to its campus
its really nice
i like no cal
not to mention its academics and prestige

even with the adjustment uc davis is ranked below uci, closer in range to ucsb. and come on, davis is not prestigious. you have got to be kidding me. ive never heard anyone mention uc davis as prestigious before, its not even close to ucsd ucla or uc berkeley, in my opinion, they are the only 3 prestigious uc's. davis' stats clearly make it the 4th easiest uc to get into, ahead of ucsc, ucr, and uc merced, but easier than uci and ucsb. im sick of davis kids coming on here and pretending their school is prestigious. just look at rankings, at top ranked programs, admittance stats, and location ect.... uci trumps uc davis. davis is the 6th best uc, and thats a fact. i cant wait till this years us news ranking comes out, and davis is still ranked the 6th best uc, even with the adjustment, then i wont have to listen to all the davis posters whine about how good their school is, when they really all wish they got into ucsd ucla and berkeley. i challenge anyone who states davis is academically better to list davis's top 10, or hell even top 20 programs according to us news. there isnt very many of them. look at uc berkeley ucla and ucsd, they each have tons. i wonder where most people would rather be... in newport beach/irvine (uci) or davis (uc davis). i think for most people the answer is obvious.
